I was reading a the manual to My JVC HD LCD TV and read something about an "Active Antenna" does anyone know what this is? And where i can get one from????
There are 2 types of antennas: active and passive. Active is one that uses electricity to boost the signal such as an indoor antenna that uses ac, or a dish LNB. A passive antenna is usually larger and or cheaper such as a indoor tv antenna that doesnt have to be plugged into an outlet or an aerial antenna. Active antennas are better for hdtv's because they pull in analog and digital channels. Digital channels are channels like 12.1, 2.1. If you buy a active antenna(which can be found at any store that sells electronics) all you have to do to hook it up is to have it plugged into your tv coaxial input or your cable box antenna input, and then program your tv through set up and have it scan for Both Digital and Analog channels. Thats it. Good Luck!
a quick look at the tactical whips and active antenna of this station
I just bought an antenna hoping to get free DTV (i have winTV HVR-1600 installed on my PC), but the box said nothing about being passive, but the manual says it is passive.
Well... I do not get signal on my PC-TV, and really poor quality on the 3 channels it picked up on my regular TV's. So I was wondering if someone could tell me simply:
1) what is a passive antenna and what its good for
2) what is an active antenna and what it's good for.
Thanks
passive - an antenna that is not amplified
good for applications where signal strength is good and cable length from antenna to TV is not over 75' - 100'.
active- has a built-in amplifier
good for weak signal areas..amplifies the signal your antenna receives
or
compensates for signal loss in long runs of cable from antenna to TV.
Dual Preamp for HF or VHF/UHF
Operates as a stand-alone antenna or in conjunction with an existing antenna
Performs like a 60 Long Wire!
Pull in those stations...The EASY way!

Hi everybody! I have a few years of electronics experience, and took a job to improve WGBH's signal (89.7 MHz) for a clock radio's antenna. The problem is that WUMD (89.3 MHz) is so powerful, that it is swamping out GBH.
My most recent attempt to fix this was to use an OP-AMP bandpass filter (which worked on the client's boombox), but the only modification was an FM trap (in series with the "antenna in" to my "active OP-AMP antenna"), and an adjustable gain feature (from 1-6) for one of the OP-AMPs.
Does anyone know of an easier way to pick up GBH clearly? Not only is UMD swamping it out, but I am working with a clock radio, whose antenna is simply a piece of wire. I thought maybe going inside of the radio and de-soldering the wire antenna, and soldering in a small piece of wire (which would connect to the output of my "active antenna") would work...does anyone have any idea if this would work? Or any other simpler, or more effective, ideas?
I would really appreciate any help!
Here's a simple fix that just might do the trick. crimp a small piece of steel to the clock radio's power cord about 4 inches away from the back of the set. Be careful not to damage the power cord. strip the end of the antenna wire and solder it to the steel. Your house wiring is now your antenna. This practice was used on clock radios in the 70's and worked a lot better than a dangling piece of 22 ga. wire. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I asked this in "Cell Phones" but didn't get any legit response. Hopefully you electronics folks will be more helpful.
I have seen some “passive repeater” products designed for vehicles that consist of an antenna that sits on top of another smaller device located inside a vehicle that re-transmits the signal. Some of these boast of a 6db gain. I would like to be able to do the same sort of thing but using an existing “yaggi” antenna as the source with the smaller “passive repeater” unit placed such that I can get reasonable wireless reception in an immediate "base camp" area.
I am not interested in spending several hundred bucks on an active repeater that requires external power. I am, however, willing to purchase one of the passive automobile repeaters and hack it such that it uses the existing “yaggi” as the source signal.
Any practical advice on how to make this work?
Any pointers to low cost passive repeater products that have a connection for an external antenna?
The "passive repeaters" used in vehicles will not work in your application. They consist solely of two aerials coupled together; any claim of gain is dubious at best, though you may get a greater erp in one direction if they use a directional aerial (such as your Yagi). Incedentally, 6dB is only double the power (sounds good but the receiver won't notice the difference), easily obtained by adding a reflector to form an H, as often seen on rooftops.
It's not totally clear what you want to do. If you need to cover an area of poor or no reception, you will need an active relay. If your phone does not need to be portable, then you cold try an external aerial connected by cable to the handset, but that obviously negates the advantage of having a mobile in the first place.
By all means experiment with your passive repeater; you have nothing to lose. Bear in mind, though, that the more elements the aerial has, the greater the gain but the narrower the beam, and at the frequencies involved here construction his to be very accurate.
The sites listed below should provide food for thought.
its cause i would like to add an external yagi antenna but my wireless is the only one thats active at the present time and not allowing my buffalo card and yagi do what there are desinged to.
Go into the systems tray. Find the wireless icon. Right click the icon and select properties. You should see a box labeled "DISABLE". Check the box and exit. Your wirelss card should be disabled.

Nokia Siemens Networks and Vodafone demonstrate Active Antenna solution
Nokia Siemens Networks and Vodafone say they have successfully tested a new antenna technology designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve the cost efficiency of mobile phone networks for operators. The tests, carried out through the recently announced Nokia Siemens Networks Innovation Centre (NICE) initiative between the two companies, is said to mark the first time that an integrated Active Antenna solution has been used on a commercial mobile WCDMA telecommunications network.
Nokia Siemens Networks Active Antenna incorporates elements of the base station within the antenna, reducing the footprint of base stations and lowering power consumption. The solution is capable of supporting multiple standards, such as GSM, WCDMA and LTE, and has been developed in accordance with the industry's Single RAN specification, which Vodafone has also played a key role in developing.
