AM/FM Radio Antenna Booster?

just bought this one:

Instructions: Simply plug booster into radio and antenna into booster. Connect power lead to switched 12-volt power source and your done. For radios with motorola style antenna plug only

I managed to get the red cable connected to the car battery, but I still does not get good signal, I still hear a lot of static when i am listening to the radio.
could it be something that i did wrong?
I bought it so i wouldn't need my antenna extended to high on my 1999 honda CRV.

Usually all it will amply what ever signal comes into it. (I've had some and in rural areas it boosted some stations but not to the level people are exclaiming in the ads because average limit for a FM station is 25 miles (even though reality is 10-100 miles)

If the antenna is extended, does your reception get better?

IF no, or the same, check the power lead or you may have a defective unit

Swap out and make sure it's put in... the unit catches the ground thru the motorola plug (standard plug used for many years, but has gone by wayside in the last 10 years or so) and if you had to add an adapter of any sort it may not allow it to work correctly also ...

So try what I wrote and if not, take a piece of wire and touch it from the adapter to ground and see if it works also.....

other than that all I can suggest is JC whitney

am/fm and 27mhz antenna placement?

can an am/fm radio antenna and a 27mhz antenna be placed in close proximity to each other without interfering with each other. i am limited in areas for placement on my boat. the am/fm antenna is 18" long and the 27 meg is 8 feet long, if that helps. by close proximity i mean around 12 inches apart
of course the am/fm is for receiving only but the 27meg receives and transmits.

I don't like 27 meg as in most cases it will be virtually useless in crap weather - just when you need it most. Oh well I have to rescue people in storms and so I am biased maybe. I have all radios on my boat except HF. AM, UHF, VHF as well as AM/FM receivers. HF I have on boats over 30 feet if offshore capable.

I use a splitter in line at the bottom end of the VHF line, which allows me to use the one antenna for both VHF and AM/FM. Utilising this saves one more thing on the roof, and simplifies the installation a bit. Your AM/FM will get the best signal this way. You simply plug the lead from the antenna into the little box, and then take one of the output leads directly to your 27 meg radio, and the other one goes to your AM/FM unit. (it's the same as any car radio plug)

Disadvantage of a 27 meg transmitter broadcasting at full power that close to your music radio aerial is that you will get scary levels of static and worse with the splatter at that range when transmitting if you are listening to domestic AM radio. Enough to freak you and your speakers out. FM will be less worried, but you will still hear it most definitely.

I would not put any antenna any closer than the width of your boat if you can, I set up my gear as far apart as possible, even then you will find that when two or more antenna are aligned, you will lose a lot of signal, both in and out.

Any good Marine store will have all the bits you need.

Good luck.

Can someone recommend an external antenna for my boombox am/fm radio?

I need to get better reception for the am band than the normal telescoping 18" antenna.

The telescopic antenna is for the f.m. band.
There is a ferrite antenna inside the radio for the a.m. band.
And there isn't a connection for an external a.m. antenna is there?

You need to put up a simple wire antenna ("hook-up" wire will do) as long and as high as you can. Fix the remote end of it to a pole or anything else suitable. Run it into the room where the receiver is and connect the inside end to a coil of wire with many turns on it (you could use an old ferrite antenna winding) and the other end of this coil to the Earth ("ground"). Locate the coil near the radio. You will probably have to experiment a little to find the best position for it.

What is the need for antenna for recieving FM radio, but not in AM radio channel?

FM = frequency modulation.

AM = amplitude modulation.

wavelengths of AM radio are much larger than FM waves, which is why they are measure in kHz (compared to the MHz of FM). This is why AM radio signals are able to travel so much farther than FM signals.

Since FM signals have much shorter wavelengths (and thus higher frequencies), the tuning needs to be more precise to pick up the desired signal, which is why an antenna is usually necessary.

can't get radio signal, what am/fm antenna to use?

I have an interesting device that I bought years ago that really boosts the antenna power of your AM radio. It's a big, round plastic device called a "Select-A-Tenna." You put it next to your radio and - wow! What a difference. this would also be a good device for those kids who have written in about bad reception on Radio Disney. You can reach them at www.selectatenna.com/

As far as FM is concerned, just have something! There's usually a connection on the back of any decent FM receiver (not a little, cheapo type). Attach a wire (the longer the better) or one of those round loop antennas available at any radio Shack.

    When your outdoor adventures take you off the power grid, you need a device that can fill multiple needs. The American Red Cross FR500 is a compact unit that you can toss in your knapsack and take anywhere. It functions as an AM, FM, and shortwave radio with NOAA weatherband. It also has a flashlight, an emergency beacon, and an emergency siren. In addition, you can use It to charge your cell phone or MP3 player. This little wonder can be powered with the hand crank, or solely by the sun - solar panels make this a very "green" device. Of course, battery power and AC power are also options. A telescoping antenna provides maximum range and reception for all radio functions.
