What is the height restriction the FCC places on Amateur Radio Service antenna structures without registration?
G3VER VHF FD

imsety An amateur antenna must be no higher that 200 feet. This is measured from the ground level at the base of the tower up to the top of the antenna structure.

What type of solid copper wire would I need to build a ground plane antenna for VHF & UHF Amateur radio use?
G3VER VHF FD

I am looking into building an antenna that was featured in the December 2008issue of CQ. It calls for 10 or 12 gauge solid copper wire. I did a search through Radio Shack and I am coming up with several types of wire.
What type of wire should I be using for this antenna?
Thanks.

Plans for a longwire hf amateur radio antenna Please !!!?
G3VER VHF FD

Anybody have any good plans for a all band end fed wire antenna ? limited space and i dont want to upset the niegbours so low visibility would be good.

Steve

There is a difference between a long wire antenna and a long piece of wire used as an antenna.

The former is the correct name for an antenna which is several wavelengths long at the frequency of operation.

The latter is simply a piece of wire which you think, subjectively, to be long.

For low visibility, use very thin wire. Enamelled copper (I think it's generally called magnet wire in the 'States) of something like 32 s.w.g. (sorry, don't have tables at hand to give the U.S. equivalent) will be invisible to your neighbours - and to you, so be careful.

Suspend as long a length as you can manage. Erecting it in a zig-zag across you land or yard will allow you to get more length.

I expect that you know you will need an antenna tuner and a good earth connection from the transmitter and receiver for best antenna efficiency.

Best of luck.

Does a radiant barrier sprayed on the inside of a roof effect amateur radio reception from an attic antenna?
G3VER VHF FD

Yes, you can lose 75-90% of your radio reception by using sprayed radiant barrier. Even worse, sprayed on radiant barrier doesn't even work well. The aluminum must not be physically touching anything else to reflect heat properly, so only radiant foil stapled to the rafters is effective.

Think of it just like a vertical dipole, only in this case the feedline is only the length of the SMA or BNC connector. The stock antenna is already connected to the center conducter of that connecter, but it doesn't have the other half of the antenna (well, it actually uses your body). So by attaching a small wire around the ground part of that SMA/BNC connector, you've just made it into a vertical dipole.
