What percentage of american households use only an antenna to get a television signal?

Asking due to the impending all digital signal in 2009...

I'd say probably 20% are still using an antenna to receive over-the-air (OTA) signals. All friends and family I have are using either cable or DishNetwork.

Is "antenna" an American word?

You know like what insects have?
If it is, what is the English equivalent?

Sorry, just something I need to know for my English coursework.

Thanks =)

It's a Latin word...

and the plural is antennae

Morality Question: During & after 9/11, did YOU fly an American Flag from your car's antenna ???

"Lady Di" just asked an interesting Question, pertaining to whether "Placing your hand over your heart" during the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag could be construed as "Worshipping an Idol".
Though NOT a Christian, I assert that it is.
MY Question: During 9/11, it seemed to me that the entire population had suddenly discovered their "Patriotic American" identity, and were flaunting it. WHAT were these people BEFORE 9/11, I wonder?
On a personal note: I flew the "Jolly Roger", the ancient symbol of Piracy & Payback, from MY antenna in Vegas.
Whatever else I may be, I'm no Hypocrite.

Your thoughts???

No I didn't. There was no message to not doing it - I just don't stick things on my car antenna. Where I live it has a tendency to be ripped up or swiped by kids.

I think I like the idea of a Jolly Roger better, but I KNOW that would have been ripped off of the antenna.

What damage does hacking router firmware to increase antenna strength cause?

I was speaking to a friend about increasing the signal on my WRT54GS so I can use it 2 floors up in my house (in a new extension)... Currently I get 0% signal, but after buying a Linksys Range Extender (putting it halfway) I could get about 50%...

But he said to me the best way to increase signal would be to use a hacked firmware such as HyperWRT (I know there are many others but he recommended this to me) which is simple to install, and would allow me to increase the antenna power (increasing the signal).

Apparently EU models are restricted to 28mW, whereas American ones are 50mW, but the full limit is 250mW (which would damage the router)... You can only change the power with the hacked firmware..

I was wondering:
a) does increasing the power leave a health risk?
b) how far could I go up without damaging the router?

Thanks.

Well when you realize that Microwave ovens also operate on 2.4 gig, you certainly get the idea what high power and concentraded 2.4 gig radio waves can do!

Most countires have rules as to what power limits can be run when using 2.4 Wifi. The FCC sets these for the US and the limit is 36 db ERP (effective radiated power) at that setting you really don't want to get right up against the antenna and stay there for any long periods.. no one really knows what the damage would be over long time exposure but they do know it wont be good.

You can probably up the power on your Linksys (there are other routers built to handle the higher output linksys wasnt') to 75-100mw but you will need to monitor the heat! Those routers that are built for higher output have radio cards built to safely handle that level using heatsinks, good design, etc. Linksys wasn't! But you need to check local laws to be sure you do not exceed the maximum allowed... the fines are very high!

At those levels there probably isn't any increased health risk but I would sit the unit away from where I sat all the time. Remember the signal drops off with distance.

  • Fans divided about Ellen DeGeneres as replacement for #39;American ...

Fans took to the Internet after Wednesday’s announcement to express either pleasant surprise or total shock that DeGeneres was picked to replace Paula Abdul.

“I mean, really? Ellen DeGeneres?” wrote popular “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli at mjsbigblog.com. “She guest judged ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ last season, and her critiques were comic relief. So is she going to be a real judge or some kind of joke? She’s a comedian, not a singer or a musician. I’m kinda flummoxed here.”

Others on the Internet, including posters on the AmericanIdol.com forums, said they were pleased that DeGeneres, who admittedly has no formal music experience, just a passion for tunes, would join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on “Idol.”
