Can someone please explain what a 'HDTV Indoor Amplified Antenna' is?

I found a 'Phillips HDTV Indoor Amplified Antenna' but can't understand from the description if it is to make a HDTV get better reception -OR- I hope, to make a 'regular' TV into an HDTV. Can someone explain. Also, if it is like I hope (to make a 'regular TV into HDTV', I also can't understand how you hook it up to the TV (it is the indoor kind). ?Is is like a cable type connection?
Thanks for reading

It's simply an amplified TV antenna, nothing more. There is nothing about an antenna that makes it "HD" or "digital" or "analog". An antenna is a dumb piece of metal that is cut for a particular frequency. Beyond that, it doesn't care what it is receiving. Slapping "HDTV" on an antenna is marketing hype.

If you want to still use your old analog TV to view digital Over The Air signals, you need a converter box. These retail for about $50 - $75. The US Government is offering $40 coupons to help with the expense. You may apply for no more than two coupons at http://www.dtv2009.gov .

Note that the converter boxes are for Over The Air reception only. If you have a Digital TV, cable service or satellite service, you do not need a converter box.

If you are using a converter box, you will need a good antenna. The one you now have may be good enough. Visit http://www.antennaweb.org , put in your ZIP code and you will get a list of stations in your area, suggestions on antennas for your unique situation and information on where to aim them.

I hope this helps. Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna?

I want to ask which Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna is best for house that are surround by tall buildings. I bought a RadioShack Indoor VHF/UHF/HDTV Antenna with RF Remote Control but some of the HD channel weren't stable. So I want to buy an Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna? Can someone please suggest which one is better? Thank you!!

There really isn't a good one. The best HDTV (or DTV) antenna is an outdoor antenna. The signal is a digital signal, and just like a cell phone, once inside, the signal gets weaker.

All cell phone carriers have a digital signal and analog signal. For example, AT&T uses digital (3G) and analog (EDGE) because while digital is the best signal, it is harder to pick up inside buildings. Sprint had a problem with dropped calls when they were only digital, and had to add analog back to their system.

Since you will not be getting analog signals after June (unless it changes again), your best bet is to get an outdoor antenna, otherwise you will keep having problems with the instability of the channels. I had to do the same thing with my grandmother. All I did was get a regular outdoor antenna and run it to the cable hookups on the outside of the house, then hooked the TVs up inside like she had cable or satellite. Now all of her digital stations are steady with no problems.

I just bought a Dynex 19" LCD HDTV with an RCA amplified indoor antenna and I'm not getting hd channels, help?

Everything seems to be hooked up fine, but when I channel scan I always get a different list and the few HD channels I get aren't the regular networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc.) I'm totally new to all this also. Plus, my PS2 looks like crap on this and lags with Guitar Hero and nothing fixes that. I mainly got this for my PS3 I'm getting for christmas and already have the HDMI cables. Hope I was specific enough. Any suggestions?

For antenna help see:

http://www.antennaweb.org

And enter at least your zip code (if so you need to find your address on the map) or your whole address for specific antenna alignment. This will help you pick a good antenna or line up the one that you have.

For indoor antennas you need to locate it near a wall or a window and raise it up as high as possible. Proper orientation of the telescoping aerials will either allow you to get VHF DTV station assignments or improve UHF DTV assignments reception.

On thing you need to pay attention to on antenna web is the assignment channel as that is the real channel that the digital or HDTV station is on. It might say 35.1 which means this is the station that airs the same program as channel 35 analog but it might be assigned to channel 22. Or it may say 2.1 and be assigned to 11 or 6.1 and be assigned to 56. Channel 6 is a lower VHF channel but 56 is a UHF channel. So these numbers are important when picking the proper antenna as well as the location from the transmitter in miles and the orientation between stations. Sometimes you need two antennas connected with a splitter (which is being used as a combiner) to pick up all the stations. Or you need to rotate your indoor antenna as needed.

As for the PS2 if it is connected via yellow, white and red which is a composite video with left and right audio cable hookup that is why it looks bad. If you have the new PS3 with a HDMI cable that will look better. But Dynex and 19 inch means this is a lower cost HDTV with probably 720p resolution at best. Hopefully it is not an EDTV with less than 720p resolution.

why does wind affect my over the air hdtv signal even though i use an indoor amplified hd antenna?

Wind is probably blowing the leaves on the trees that are between your antenna and the transmitter site. Leaves and other foliage absorb some of the UHF transmitter signals thus reducing the signal off and on just enough to disrupt the proper decoding of the signal.

Raise your antenna on a shelf or place it on the upper floor in a home with more than one story (two or more story -- level -- home). I have my antenna on a shelf I made and I have it all the way up to the ceiling with its VHF rods extended all the way out and tilted just to touch the ceiling. Works except in heavy rain.

The biggest problem with indoor antennas is you need to reorient them for just about every channel change to make them work the best. Nothing beats an outdoor antenna that is 30 feet or more in the air and above most trees.

Help!! Looking at Winegard SS 3000 indoor antenna?

Can you help me with this. I'm looking at getting rid of my cable bill and I ran across this particular antenna. My living location is flat land with no tall buildings around.
I would be placing this on top of my entertainment center which is close to the ceiling.

Are you having real good luck with this model or is their a better indoor hdtv amplified antenna I don't know about?

Amplified Antennae are the same for the original Frequency that you were receiving the channel on before digitalization. (lotta words) if you try this antenna out without cable and only want to receive the (over the air channels) and they are clear go ahead. but remember that over the air channels are going to be the same as you would receive now. not new ones. (whew I A'int a typist)
