I have a RCA antenna, but my sound goes up and down. And then I have to turn the sound up and then it gets to loud and I have to turn it down. And sometimes I have to move the antenna to get a good picture and sound. And is a amplified tv antenna better then a UHF/VHF antenna?
Yes you can use an amplified antenna with a converter box. It will boost the signal by 8db or more.
However you may still need to move your antenna depending on where your tv stations are broadcasting from/

There are so many kinds out there, what do I look for? I have a newer tv and don't need to have a converter box just a good antenna.
The information you find on boxes in the stores is just about worthless for picking out an antenna.
Indoor antennas are always a hit and miss proposition. But if you read enough reviews, there are a few models that stand out as better than others.
If you are real close to your local TV transmitters, an amplified antenna can be worse than a non-amplified one. The reason is that too strong of a signal can overload the amplifier. This causes the signal to be distorted. Also a poorly designed amplifier can be worse than no amplifier at all.
One thing you need to know if whether all of the stations that you want to receive are transmitting in UHF or if some of them are VHF.
Unlike anlaog channels, digital channel numbers don't tell you this information. If you enter your zip code at the first link below, you can find this infomation.
"Real" channels 2-13 are VHF, 14-51 are UHF.

i bought a tv antenna for a hdtv and im trying to get hd over the air but cant get a signal on any channel... do i need a stronger antenna?
An amplified antenna can help you if you have a relatively weak (but detectable) signal that you need to send down a long cable run and/or to multiple devices. If you hook up three TV's to an antenna and lose your signal, then an amplifier may help.
If you're not getting a good signal on a short or medium length run (<10 ft) to a single TV, than an amplified antenna likely won't help you. Your noise level is so high that the amplifier will not improve the signal to noise ratio.
If you're trying to get an over-the-air (OTA) signal, you may need to get a larger, more sensitive antenna, and you may need to place it outside.
go to www.antennaweb.org for details on antenna types and signal directions.
BTW, your apartment complex or homeowner's association cannot prevent you from using an outdoor antenna if you need one to get OTA broadcasts. If you're getting digital signals, like HDTV, then you're allow to place the antenna wherever you need to get a signal, even if it's visible to every one of your neighbors.
For apartment dwellers, the additional caveats are that you cannot mount anything permanent to the building unless you get permission, and you can be prevented from using an outdoor antenna if the complex provides you with a building-wide antenna connection or cable signal at no charge.

I have Dish and do not yet wish to invest in a hi-def receiver and package. For the few hi-def shows that I would like to see I use an indoor antenna. Local stations come in great. There are some stations that are coming from about 50 miles away and I do not want to install an outdoor antenna since I may switch to satellite hi-def next year.
Would an amplified indoor antenna do any good or are they just gimmicks?
I am using one, not sure if I needed it for HD, but i did for SD tv.
As to channels 2 thru 6 not being used for HD, That is BS, In my viewing area, I have HD channels 2 & 5. And according the the station engineers, "We have no knowledge of our frequencies changing" a large amout of money and equipment has been invested in making the change".
First, there's no such thing as a digital antenna; that's just marketing hype. An antenna cares about frequency (channel) not what's on the channels.
An amplified antenna has an amplifier. It's as simple as that. You will need to supply power to the amplifier in the antenna for it to work, though.
An amp is not a magic cure all. If you are not getting sufficient signal from the antenna (the signal is down in the noise), an amplifier will amplify the noise too and you won't see an improvement. You would be much better off getting an antenna good enough to capture enough signal for the TV to work.
Amplifiers are good if you have a good signal off the antenna and you are trying to overcome a long down lead or have splitters for multiple TVs. But, you have to have a good signal in the first place.

Customer feedback:
1. As part of the transition to DTV broadcasting I got a Tivax converter box along with this antenna. It works great! Before using this combination with the old rabbit ears antenna and regular analog TV there were a few channels with snow. Now I can receive over 20 channels over the air for free with clear pictures and sound.
