Amplifier TV Antenna

Antennas Answers

where would I connect a TV antenna amplifier ?

I recently bought a television antenna amplifier. I do have a hdtv converter box, where do I install the amplifier? before the convert or box or after.also
can I run two TVS off one converter or box?

Ideally, the only good place to install an antenna amplifier is at the antenna itself. If you're talking about an indoor antenna, it goes between the antenna and your digital converter (if that's what you have). Generally, amplifiers are ineffective with indoor antennas unless they are an integral part of the antenna design. But you can try it.

On a digital converter, you could connect one TV via the coaxial output jack and another via the A-V jacks. You could also try connecting the coaxial output jack to a 2-port splitter and then running coaxial cable to the antenna connectors of two TVs.

The downside of operating two TVs from one digital converter is that both sets will only get the same channel--whichever digital channel you've selected with the digital converter's remote. Your TV is left on the same channel full time (analog 3 or 4, depending on the output of your converter).

Also, be advised that your digital converter is not an "HDTV converter box." The output of the converter is analog SD only. You need an HDTV to get HD.

TV Antenna PreAmp > Amplifier Coax Length?

I just bought a Phillips UHF/VHF/FM PreAmp (Model SWS2083W/17) for my antenna. What is the max. length of coaxial (75 ohm) or twinlead (300 ohm) cable I can have between the PreAmp at the antenna and the Amplifier that plugs into the wall outlet?

Lots of variables there. It depends on:

1) How good the cable is (how lossy it is)
2) What frequencies you are trying to receive (the higher the frequency, the more the loss in the cable)
3) How noisy the pre-amp is.
4) How strong the stations are.
5) How good the antenna is, and how well it's pointed
6) Whether you have line-of-sight on the transmitting towers.
7) How far away you are from the transmitting towers.
8) How good your TV receiver is

Sorry for no "pat" answers... you just have to do the measurements and/or run the numbers if you can get ahold of them.

Why does my tv antenna amplifier keep going bad?

I bought the biggest outdoor antenna I could find, a rotator, and a 28 db amplifier that mounts half on the antenna and half inside that plugs in. At first I was getting every channel that I could pull in, then the signal just went bad, so I took out the amp and bada-bing, most of the channels back. So I went out and bought the same amp again and got all the channels back for about a month, then guess what, signal loss. So I decided to buy a 13db amp that just goes inside, hey I got all my channels back, for about a month, dang-it. PLEASE help me.

Is your antenna mast grounded?
Is your coax grounded through a grounding block?

Until you verify that you have done the obvious, there is little point in speculating as to the cause of the problem.

Is there an amplifier for digital tv antennas?

using indoor antenna, signal level on all available digital channels run between 63 to 93. The lower levels chop out from time to time. Looking for a solution short of a taller outside antenna. Antennas are restricted in my town.

Antenna amps don't care if a signal is digital or analog so any of them should work. Beware that, if the signal is too noisy, adding an amplifier won't help you any. The amp will amplify the noise along with the signal so the TV still may not be able to pick out the signal. In that case, you will need a better antenna.

How does your city restrict antennas? If they are banning outside antennas, that's against federal law.

Does your body also act as a sort of "reception amplifier" when you are near a TV antenna, for some reason?

Definitely not an amplifier, but standing close to or moving your arms near an indoor antenna can affect reception. What appears to be amplification may simply be you are canceling out some undesirable condition (multipath, or non-optimum direction of the antenna) that is present when you aren't close.

Indoor antennas should be tested for best orientation by moving it a little, then stepping well away from it. In addition to finding the optimum direction to point it, try moving it forward and back a little. Getting just a few inches closer to the signal source can actually make a difference, due to the very short wavelengths on UHF (most digital channels in the U.S. are now on UHF).
