We live like 30-40 miles away from any of the towers. The indoor antenna we have now worked great for the digital stations until they fully broadcasted in digital only, now we might need a stronger antenna, we live in an apartment and cant mount an outdoor antenna, and the one we have now is a digital amplified one.
My home made antenna works better than any store bought antennas I ever tried and cost me less than $5.oo to build.
This is my story;
Before you buy a antenna for your new HDTV or converter box, try hooking up your old analog TV antenna. If your digital signal is weak and you have a lot of drop outs. You may want to build your own antenna like I did. I have tried all sorts of commercial store bought antennas and must say my home made antenna beats the pants off of all of them.
Go to my MSN blog to get all the info you'll need to build your own antenna.

I also require to know which is the longest distance this microwave antenna can cover, to make jumps from antenna to antenna. Thanks in advance.
Yep. I would have said... don't stick it in your ear.... but apart from that....
30dBm is 1W. Doesn't really light much of a bulb. Your cell phone might put out something very similar right next to your ear, though...
Having said that... at 8GHz one could potentially focus this energy on a rather small spot (lambda being on the order of only an inch or so). So if your microwave antenna happened to be focusing on a spot and you are right in it... you might feel some heat. But that is usually not how one would operate such an antenna. Instead it would be a dish which makes a relatively wide but well collimated beam. And stepping into that will do only one thing: stop communications completely.

Attractive Contemporary Design with Internal Antenna
I have a TV in the basement, it's within 5ft of the basement's outer cement wall. right now it's hooked up to a DVD player and a VCR and a RF modulator (so i can run the DVD signal past the VCR). There are so many cables running around behind this thing that it picks up a number of channels with varing quality with no antenna. (8 & 10 are strong, and 12 & 49 are pretty fuzzy, with bad weather i lose 49 pretty often)
The reception is at the leve where if I stand in just the right spot near the TV it'll kill the signal, or if it's off-day a different spot might make it viewable. What sort of options are there for an indoor antenna? Will a simple set of rabbit ears make a big difference? What if I just tie some copper wire to an exposed cable and run it around on the floor, would that do anything?
an outdoor antenna is NOT an option for me here, I'm looking only for options that can be implimented in the immediate vicinity of the television.
You're screwed...you're UNDERGROUND....TV signals get grounded underground...The only reason you're getting signal is because it's being bounced down into your PIT....
Park your car on the opposite side of your home where the transmitters are located that you want the most....they might REFLECT the signal into your PIT...
Personally, I'd find a window, open the top and toss an antenna out in the yard.
Maybe drill a hole for some Coax, find the correct size and type of antenna, along with the pointing direction at
http://www.antennaweb.org
And really get a permanent antenna wire into that PIT you live in.....
(You ever listen to Bob and Tom in the morning? They have a guy who calls in about a woman trapped in his PIT.)

I'm looking to drop cable but I bought rabbit ears today and only got CBS with my new digital converter. Other stations were sensed, but didn't work in any way you could actually watch. Of course, I can't have a visible antenna in my community.
The rules regarding antennas for apartments only restrict you to not modify the premises or place antennas in any "common" areas. If you're up against some homeowner's association CC&Rs, go tell them to pound sand. You're completely within your rights to have a visible antenna. Since the channel range has been reduced to 7-51 for most of the country, you may be able to get away with a smaller antenna than normal. Of course, if you're not in a detached house, you may not be able to point the antenna in the right direction.
Check the sites below.
I need to put some "rabbit ears" on my TV because my new apartment doesn't have an external antenna. Does it matter what I buy, or will anything pick up the digital signals when the switch happens in February. I'm waiting on my coupon to buy the DTV converter box, but I want to hook up an antenna now. What should I buy?
You'll need a UHF antenna (commonly marketed to consumers as an overpriced 'hdtv antenna'). Sales people at Best Buy and similar electronics stores have a high turnover rate. Ask them how long they've worked there before taking any advice they give seriously.
I've tried them and I know that the ones at Radio Shack weren't good enough to pick up signals from my local stations. If you're on the first floor apt surrounded by other buildings or hilly terrain, a packaged antenna like that won't work. If you're on the 3rd floor apt and you live in the midwest or somewhere flat...then you might get away with it. The closer to the TV station, the less of an antenna you'll need.
This is a rooftop antenna, but you can put it on your deck or hang it on the side of the house like the satellite dish guys do. http://www.antennasdirect.com/DB4_HDTV_a ntenna.html
You can get this type of antenna (DB4) from many different sources, and it works really well for most situations. I got mine for like half the price listed there. Check out antennaweb.org to figure out what type of antenna you need for your area.

Antenna Control Rack Space Is Slashed In Half By DEV Systemtechnik ...
To increase uptime, large cable head end stations use motorized antennas as mobile redundancy. If a stationary antenna fails, a redundancy switch assures the satellite signals are routed via the mobile backup antenna. Until recently, DEV Systemtechnik offered a two-part solution for this task, consisting of two appliances of 3RU each. Now DEV is the only vendor to integrate the complete functionality into one single 3RU chassis. The new solution is faster and more robust than its predecessor, and costs 25 per cent less. The combination of the antenna monitoring and control system DEV 9110 and the redundancy switch DEV 1993 offered operators a convenient...
