Since that particular model does not have any external connections provided you have two choices.
1. If you are handy with circuit board modifications you can "add a jack" - open the unit, find the current internal connections, put another line in and run to an external antenna plug. You can buy the parts (cable and jack) from some online parts supply houses .
2. Add another Access Point - just simply add another AP which connects up to a switch connected to the router. Be sure the AP you add includes external antenna connections.
Like the Linksys WAP200 (this unit has two detachable antennas - you can add an external antenna to either connection point.)

Sorry no easy instant solution with this unit. Adding another AP is the easiest fix.

Hi,
I just purchased an ASUS WL-138g which has an antenna that is really weak. It is suggested that I replace the rubber duck antenna with a better one.
I've been looking in ebay for good deals and found out many cheap deals for 10, 8, 6, 7 dbi. I mean really cheap.
I also noticed that the bigger the DBI, the longer the antenna gets. However, I found some branded antennas which has 7dbi but as short as my stock Asus antenna.
What is better, a 6-inch 7dbi branded (dlink, linksys) antenna or a 14-inch 10dbi generic antenna?
Thank you.
The DBI is the issue. The higher the number the more gain that is delivered. 3db will "double" the antenna range/power. So 10dbi is twice the gain of a 7dbi which is twice the gain of 4dbi etc.
Usually on "rubber duck" type antennas getting higher gain will use a longer antenna. However, It really doesn't take 14" to get good gain, that is just poor design which sometimes translates to "cheap". Chances are in that situation that a linksys 7dbi could give better than the "14 inch 10dbi" built by someone who doesn't really understand good design. It really is hard to tell who does the job correctly. I usually stay with KNOWN antenna builders, there are many out there.

I need to connect to a wifi .11g access point from about 1/8mile using a mobile laptop (used from different locations near same access point). I am trying to find a high power 200mw or higher laptop PCMCIA/Cardbus or USB card with probably an internal and optional external antenna connector (for ~5-7dbi omni antenna??). Preferably under $80 or so. I had a Linksys .11b card with little success. I've borrowed a Linksys GS .11g wifi card now that only intermittently gets a connection and this is in winter with no leaves on the trees. In summer it's not even worth trying. Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions.

Re: Cantenna option - since I have to move roughly in 270deg arc around the base AP, and I can't modify the antenna setup/location of the AP - I would assume setting up the Cantenna or other directional antenna on the laptop would work best? Any suggestions on a good high-power card with an external antenna jack to connect to the Cantenna? I was hoping to get .11g speeds (video/audio feed) since .11b seems to be too slow (when I'm closer to AP).
Thanks again for your help.

If you do not move around much, and the AP does not need to provide service to a wider arc, I recommend a directional antennae.

I go to our lake house about once a month and my neighbor said I could use his unsecured internet service but I have a problem always pulling it up. I have a new but cheap Compaq laptop to keep there. Do I need to buy a USB wireless N external antenna? I sometimes have to go in the garage or in the front yard to pick up the signal. Thanks
I am just a laymen when it comes to computers so no techy answers if possible.
If you are unable to modify your neighbor's wireless Linksys then there are a few options:
The best would be to enhance the antenna on your laptop, I'm guessing that it is a mini-PCI card with the antenna built into the laptop, so that really isn't an option.
An external wireless N-Antenna should give you better range, make sure that it is an external antenna setup that utilizes MIMO. Not that the Linksys on the other side uses it, but the extra antennas on the N-side will help resolve multipath issues that could be occurring.
If the N-Card you purchase has external antennas, you can try to enhance the antennas by cutting a hole in the bottom of a Pringles can and making a make-shift Yagi antenna out of it.
Since the Linksys is open, you could also try getting a repeater. Place the repeater in your house where it should be able to pick up the signal, you should then be able to connect to the repeater everywhere else in the house.
You may need to enhance the repeater's antennas like I mentioned for the N-Adapter above.
ok, so i have a biquad wifi antenna and i have it connected thru the external antenna of the linksys wirless card. my desktop uses the wifi no problem. now i want wirless throughout my house, do i just buy a router and plug it in the back of my computer?
now i bought me a netgear rangemax wpn824 wirless router, when i go to install it it says a cable isnt connected to your hi speed modem, but i dont need the modem according to the guy who makes the biquads, so, do i get a different router or what? how do i set this up to get wifi in my house for my ps3
So how are you getting Wi-Fi on your desktop?
The biquad wifi antenna is attached to your computer through the linksys wireless card, but where is it picking up the WiFi signal from to connect to the Internet?
What is connected to your modem? If your desktop is connected to the modem, then it isn't using the Wi-Fi at all, unless you are trying to get the other devices to connect to the Internet through this desktop computer. (Major security risk to your computer).
The wireless router needs to plug into the modem to connect to the Internet and then send out the wireless signal to allow your computers or PS3 to connect to it.
Plug your router (netgear) into the modem using Ethernet. You should be able to plug the Ethernet currently connected to the modem through the LAN port on the router.
