How do you fix a car power antenna?

The antenna won't go up or down just stays in place: On a '97 4Runner and a '96 Pathfinder.

Most of those antennas work on a piece of plastic that has teeth molded into the side of it. This plastic strip pushes the antenna up and down with the aid of a motor and gear set up. What happens is that after a while these plastic teeth get broke off the strip and the motor can no longer move the antenna up and down as its stuck in an area with no teeth to grab. I don't think this a repairable item, I think that you just have to replace the whole unit.

What product has something like a power car antenna but larger/stronger?

Need it for an engineering project. Needs to be a telescoping pole that is controlled electronically. Thanks!

Maybe you can use a linear actuator. You did not specify how long you need it to go, but they make several different sizes and power requirements. You should also specify your budget since you can pay as much as you want for these things.

Another option would be to use a window regulator. This is basically a gear motor, but some of the window regulators come with nice captured tracks. Every different car manufacturer uses different styles and designs, even from 2 door to 4 door models in the same year. So, you have to look at lots of pictures to try to find one that you think will work. I usually use Honda and Toyota regulators since they're cheaper and more common. See the 1aauto.com link below for good deals too.

Can is replace a car's power antenna with a plain mast-type antenna?

I have a 92 Buick Pk Ave. I use it to commute to the train station
and don't want to invest a lot of money in it. The power antenna
recently quit working and I am wondering if it OK to replace it
with a regular, fixed (non-telescoping/non-powered) antenna.

Absolutely no problem I did the same.
It makes no sense to put that kind of money (power antenna) into a 1992 vehicle.

My car antenna broke on my 99 Celica, it was originally a power antenna however I disconnected it and never reconnected it when I installed a headunit. Can I put a manual antenna in since I dont care about the power function and still have it work properly?

Would this antenna lose reception because it is so small?

If the antenna is in the up position, disconnect the antenna motor to keep the unit from running.

Is there a way to "winterize" a car power antenna?

the best way is to park it in the garage and keep it there. unless you live in the arctic circle most power antennas never give any problems during "normal" cold weather.
