Can a car cellular antenna be modified to use as a WIFI antenna in a car?
Black Mountain

Building a "carputer" which will have its own internet access in the car. This internet/network connection I would like to be able to access in the house and even use my car as a "hot spot" I would like to mount an antenna to the roof or rear glass (like cellular antennas) but cant seem to find a "car wifi antenna" so can I use a regular cellular antenna for 802.11?

Not possible. each antenna is designed to reveive and send certain frequencies, alas, a cell antenna is very small so it receives a smaller wavelength which is a higher frequency, while wifi is a lower frequency so you'll need an antenna that is large enough to receive a larger wavelength. And no a radio antenna will not work, and I'm sure its very illegal. check with the FCC first if you are going to try modifying it. The last thing you need is your brain to be cooked from abnormally high frequencies passing through it.

There are antennas, for that sort of thing, limos and trains have them. I found a few here.

Careful when using your home as a hot spot. there is this thing called War Driving where people drive around and sniff out your wireless internet, crack the encryption (if any is used) and use your internet for free in their own car.

what type of antenna does my cellular phone use?
Antennae, zimer maver enuff yeap

I need to know what are the components of a cellular phone antenna
(not the antenna booster). What type of antenna (I am not talking about the base station antennas) the cellular phone uses.
For example is it omni, etc,..
Could u all send me a reference

Hi there....

All antennas that are in a cell phone are omnidirectional. This is so that the orientation of the phone's antenna will not affect your signal strength in a given area.

Hope this helps!

What's the best internal cellular antenna?
IMG_0134a

I use one called Tri-cell or Try-Cell that looks like a triangle and goes in your phone under your battery. It works really good, but now I need another one for another phone & can't seem to locate them to buy one.

Thanks,
Bryan

They all suck - and do nothing but make it a little more difficult to put the battery cover back on.

How much electricity do cellular phone antennas use?

The big attennas near the side of the road?

Phones with CDMA modulation can transmit at as much as 200 milli-watts, phones using TDMA (GSM) or AMPS can go even higher to 650 milli-watts…while I have not seen numbers specific to cellular towers (only phones themselves), from an engineering stand point, the towers should be transmitting at least as much power as handsets, if not more.
But if you want a REAL answer, go jump one of those fences around a tower, take a look around, and find the kilo-watt hour meter. Its probably gonna be the only way to get a good true to life answer. (unless of course you find someone that works on towers, but that probably wouldn’t involve breaking and entering, and what fun is that?)

“I am in sales and I cover New England and upstate New York. With all of the hills and mountains, my cell phone was often of no use to me at all, either dropping calls or not working at all. Being able to use my phone while traveling is critical to me because driving time is “Dead Time” for me in terms of sales productivity without a functioning phone. I was also paying a lot of money for the dropped calls and calls that were not clear enough to communicate. The rounding up of minutes charged to my account after each disconnect amounted to hundreds of wasted minutes every month . I recently saw the Wilson Cellular Dual-Band NMO Mount Antenna when I stopped for gas at a truck stop in the Berkshire Mountain area of western Massachusetts and decided to give it a try. It is terrific! I have not dropped a call since. It has already paid for itself in just a few weeks!”
