What is the longest distance you can achieve with a directional antenna on your WiFi router?

If I put a directional antenna on my rooftop, how far can I broadcast my WiFi connection?

Given the right equipment and line of sight you should get a couple of miles range. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-range_ Wi-Fi

A friend and I were going to try this with 700mw and calculated we should get a range of about 4 miles - nothing came of the project though as our wives objected to the thought of having the directional antenna towers.

what is the best way to amplify a wireless router? also using a directional antenna?
Danyang Radio Station

I want to transmit a signal to another warehouse that is about 1000' away. I would like to get some sort of amplifier and directional antenna for this. I am using a wrt54g or a parkervision wireless router, whichever one is easiest to boost. Any ideas?? thanks!!!

Those $50 linksys router couldn't handle your needs. You need to have a high gain omnidirectional antenna or infared, and there is no obstruction between the path.

See the link below for more info, at least it gives you an idea.

or If you are more creative, you could try out Quadband disk antenna

What is the best type of omni directional wi-fi antenna?
I'll Alert The Media... Blue on Blue

I am trying to figure out what is the best type of omni directional antenna for outdoor wi-fi use.

I am gonna be making a hot spot and want to know the best type of omni that will give me the best range and throughput.

I will be using a either a wireless-b or g router for the access point. I know g gives the best possible speed but does the range compare to wireless b at the longer ranges?

Please give as much knowledge as possible.

Thanks

You are way ahead of yourself. The first thing you need to do is a site survey. You need to figure out how much coverage do you want or need (WLAN cell radius). Will the cell cover users just outside or inside as well ? You need to identify holes of coverage due to mulipath, interference and any neighboring WLAN's.

Also as the operating frequency of the increases from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz there is additional path loss. This results in a smaller cell radius. While it is good that you have thought about antenna diversity there are a lot of other factors that you need to consider for optimal performance of your WLAN.

how to turn a Omni directional antenna into a Directional one?
i have a Hawking HWUG1 Wireless G USB Network Adapter with External SMA Jack and i am buying a [HAO9SIP] Outdoor Hi-Gain 9dBi Omni-Directional Wireless Antenna Kit to exstend the Range of it i wanted to know how can i turn a Omni Directional Wireless Kit in to a Directional one ? i have some ideas but some tutorials will help

If yo uare talking DIY i've heard of people using pringle tubes to direct signal, never seen or tried it though.

What is the best OMNI-DIRECTIONAL antenna for pulling in over the air digital stations?
 Multi-Band Directional Cellular Antenna (489-DB)

Looking to put an antenna in a fixed location in my attic to run multiple tvs.

Would like to pull in as many nearby channels as I can without needing to constantly adjust the antenna.

Will use digital converters on the tvs to pull in the digital signals.

Every location is different in terms of the antenna type you need. Your best bet is to go to http://www.antennaweb.org

Put your address and style of home into this web site & they will tell you exactly the type of antenna and the direction the antenna should be pointed to receive digital broadcasts in your area.

  • Receiving Clarity - 101 on Directional Antennas

Directional Antennas also acknowledged as beam antennas can assist in focusing the energy in a particular direction which in return can help in trouncing fading and multipath, but multipath on its own diminishes the focusing power of a directional antenna. Directional antennas which are used indoors normally have a subordinate gain; with the result they contain lower front-to-back and front-to-side lobe ratios. All this results in inferior capability to discard or reduce the meddling signals received from directions outside the primary lobe area.

Most of the Directional Antennas functions occur by concentrating the energy of the antenna signal into an exaggerated unidirectional beam. In a majority of line-of-sight applications the directional antenna permits the MPX HD multipoint extender receiver to be located up to 1000 feet from the transmitter. For extensive and standard wavelength frequencies, tower arrays are utilized in most cases as directional antennas. Some of the powerful directional antennas which use 15.8dB gain, like DB8 are meant for people who are at great distances from transmitters. The bow tie design of this directional antenna utilizes triangular elements instead of rods in an effort to increase its bandwidth allowing it to cover the complete UHF band.
