Does the Garmin XM satellite antenna fuction as a gain antenna if I don't have a NAV traffic subscription, or would it be pointless to have it? I'm thinking about getting a subscription later on, but right now I just want to boost my signal.
It should act as a gain without Nav.
This tiny remote antenna provides additional gain to your receiver and, when mounted on the roof of your vehicle, will give you complete 360 ...
I use a thick strap around much of the unit to attach it to my arm for running. Today it lost signal for two out of ten miles and I'm wondering if maybe I can locate the strap in a different way to avoid this happening in the future. Please include a reference for your answer if you can. Thanks!
GPS receivers with this form factor usually have a patch antenna mounted on the screen side of the unit, just above the screen. So on the Edge 305, just above where it says Garmin. The owner's manual suggests orienting the unit so the face points toward the sky, which likely means the unit has a patch antenna that is mounted on the screen side of the unit.

I want to buy a new GPS/SONAR for my new boat. Anyone have one with an internal antenna? I would like to know if you ever lose signal.
Whats the difference between the single and double frequency? This is the model Im looking at buying, Eagle SeaCharter 642C DF iGPS but Im interested in the new lowrance hds models also. Any info would be appreciated.
Internal will be fine if the unit is mounted outside the cabin (I'm not a boater so I don't know if that is the proper term). If its mounted "indoors" then you should go with the external antenna.
Single vs dual frequency in GPS terms means whether or not you can track L1 only (i.e. single freq) or L1 and L2 (i.e. dual freq). Generally, dual frequency receivers in GPS have a specific [high-end] use (engineering or military). Its not likely to do the consumer any good. However, looking at the spec sheet for this model (http://www.eaglenav.com/en/Products/Fish finder-Chartplotters/SeaCharter-642C-DF- iGPS/), I believe the dual freq refers to the sonar, not GPS. (I have no knowledge of sonars, but I suspect this means the sonar operates at 2 frequencies for better precision)
1. External Active Antenna for GPS
2. Allows more flexible antenna placement for better reception
3. Magnetic base and water resistent
acquire satelite signal during startup when I was in downtown Seattle..
there were many tall buildings that time
I wasnt in them, but I was arround them !!
Is it normal to behave like it, or is it a defunct ? or refurb
do I need to return it ? I bought it at Costco.com
You might wanna go through the manufactures first to see if its just a trouble shooting kind of issue if not you have two options. 1 return it back to Costco.com you just contact them and they can ship you out a return package slip for free, and they'll be able to credit back your card however you paid. Option number 2 is return it to your nearest Costco be sure to have your receipt with you NOT THE PACKAGING SLIP that came with the product, when you purchased the item there is a page that says print out this page as your receipt, but anyways also make sure that you have all the merchandise it came with plugs brochures etc. the only way that at the Costco level can you credit card be credited back is if you used an amex card cause at the warehouse level the only credit card Costco accepts is amex if you used a visa etc. card they'd have to give you cash or a Costco cash card they cant credit back anything else.
Also, I just bought the Streetpilot C340, It is preloaded, but I cannot download updated maps because it says I don't have Mapsource. I cannot download that because my garmin was preloaded... how do I add new maps if I decide to buy them?
Oh, and yes, the antenna question please.
Thanks
The GTM10 has to be installed in the vehicle, meaning you have to pull the radio to install to the exterior antenna. The GTM 12 does not require the installation and is much easier to use.
If you have a version prior to version 8, you may obtain the update disk from the garmin site. If you have version 8 already, there is nothing to update.
