Hd TV Antenna

I have an HD-Ready TV but I dont want to pay for a monthly HD service because of the cost so I just use regular antenna. Recently I discovered that you can get HD signal from HD antennas.

When I went to the store I thought it would be an easy buy. All the antennas available had their amplification values written and in bold letters on teh box. The antennas in Circuit City were priced according to their Db values, the higher the Db value, the higher the price. But when I went to Best Buy, the prices were inversely proportional to their Db values. Is the Db value really what I should be looking for in a good HD antenna?

Also if anyone has any experience, can you tell me which brand do you think makes the best HD antennas?

My husband knows all about that stuff, he says that you can get a 'regular' antenna. He has been using one to get the local HD channels for over a year. Right now we are using a Phillips Magnovox Signal Choice Series SPC030. It works great, I think fairly inexpensive. We also have a Jensen antenna, but we are not using it anymore. Hope that helps a lil. (By the way, we have a 46in lcd hdtv, wall mounted, etc....sometimes people tease him bc he still has the 'rabbit-ears' but they totally work! Amazing hd picture for abc, nbc, cbs, fox, etc).

Looking for ways to cut expenses, I'm thinking of canceling my Verizon Fios tv package. I've read up a bit about it, and apparently there are now quite a few free HD tv broadcasts available in my area of Florida.

Has anyone canceled their cable and gone back to antenna tv? If so, what did you have to do?

Before you cancel, try just disconnecting your stb and see how you like it and what stations you really do get try it out for a little while. The other thing to consider is the cancellation fee. Will it really be worth it to cancel or just wait until your contract is up. I would advise you to call Verizon and ask about the cancellation policy

I have bought a HD monitor rather than a HD TV and so it does not have a normal TV antenna connection. If I buy a HD box from my TV providor will I be able to get all the channels through the box only ? Also, is there a connection I can but for a TV antenna to HD plug so I don't have to buy the HD box ?

You must BUY some sort of TV tuner.

The HD box from the cable company is one way to do it. It will convert cable TV to an output the monitor can use.

You can get a digital converter box with component output is another way.

Or check the monitor manufacturers web site to see if they offer an external tuner for the monitor.

I have an HD antenna for my HD TV, (no Satellite TV at all) but all my other tvs are analog. An HD receiver is way more expensive than a Satellite HD receiver.
I know I won't get HD in a regular Analog TV (duh!... lol) ... I guess what I mean is Digital quality on an Analog with a receiver from a Satellite Company... Thanks

Mostly no. Most satellite receivers won't work unless activated. There are a few old ones that will do this. These trade on e-bay frequently.

If you are in the US, it's probably best to wait until Jan 2008 when the government will start giving out discount coupons for new digital converter boxes. You should be able to pick up a couple of these for about $20 each (after the coupon).

Keep in mind that while these boxes will tune in all digital broadcasts (including HD), they will down convert the signal to match the old TV's limitations. You should get the kind of picture you get with DVDs. This is by definition not HD quality.

my friend has a HD TV antenna and there tv is better than cable, is this really work, they live way out of town and don't have cable just there HDTV antenna. does that mean we would only get HD channels really clear. if so how can i find out what HD channels are around me?

IF you get an antenna and do a channel search you will pick up all the HD stations available in your area..the info menu, of your TV will tell you if it is HD or not also what HD 720p 1080i etc. to get HD on cable you need an HD converter box usually the cable company charges extra for this and also for programing with HD contect. If you deside this is the way you want to go, get an outdoor antenna hook it up to your cable feed and you wii get really good reception that way.
