Someone who knows how cell phone networks work -- what were the huge computer ish like things?

Hi,

me and my sister like to explore my church. So, one day we were exploring this room which is under the room to get to the steepil, and we finally gained access to it, there were these huge computer like things standing on a metal crate making a lot of fan noise. I assume that they are connected to those cell phone antennas, because my church has those in the steepil because cellphone companies pay them to have them there. Its the highest point of town i guess..

Are these computers? or like transformers? or what?

Thanks

A cell site is a site where antennas and electronic communications equipment are placed to create a cell in a cellular network for the use of mobile phones. A cell site is composed of a tower or other elevated structure for mounting antennas, and one or more sets of transmitter/receivers transceivers, digital signal processors, control electronics, a GPS receiver for timing (for CDMA2000 or IS-95 systems), regular and backup electrical power sources, and sheltering.

Passive cell repeaters?

My family has a very rural hunting/getaway place with a “base camp” that is located in a low spot on the property. Even in the higher spots cell phone coverage is spotty at best. We have a “yaggi” style antenna that will give us strong signal if it is plugged directly into an external antenna connection on a phone. This is workable, but somewhat inconvenient.

I have seen some “passive repeater” products designed for vehicles that consist of an antenna that sits on top of another smaller device located inside the vehicle that re-transmits the signal. Some of these boast of a 6db gain. I would like to be able to do the same sort of thing but using the existing “yaggi” antenna as the source with the smaller “passive repeater” unit placed such that we can get reasonable wireless reception in the immediate base camp area.

I am not interested in spending several hundred bucks on an active repeater that requires external power. I am, however, willing to purchase one of the passive automobile repeaters and hack it such that it uses the existing “yaggi” as the source signal.

Any practical advice on how to make this work will be greatly appreciated.

Any pointers to low cost passive repeater products that have an external antenna connection will be a big plus.

I have one repeater, sell about $450 include everything Do it yourself.

very nice look.

  • How to Improve your 3G Mobile Broadband Signal | Gearzap Blog

One of the great things about Mobile Broadband is that you can go online anywhere you like – but you can almost guarantee that the place you need it the most is the place where signal is at its weakest.

While 3G coverage is getting stronger with all networks, there will still be blackspots where it drops out, or you can only pick up a 2G signal. Thankfully, a couple of solutions are now available to try and get round these signal issues.

There are two solutions to increase your Mobile Broadband Signal:
