I currently have basic cable through TVMAX. I have an HDTV with a built in ATSC tuner. I also have an HDTV antenna. However, my tv only has one port to hook in a cable plug. Either I have to unplug my cable to get the antenna hooked into the tv, which means I don't get my cable channels, or vice versa.
Do I need a splitter, or how do I go about using my analog cable, and hooking up my new antenna for over the air HDTV?
Well, THAT sucks.....You'll have to choose.
You can connect an outdoor antenna using a <<splitter>>, but I'd recommend an electronic <<RF switch>> be used so you don't have to get up and walk over to the mechanical switch....look for something like that....
NOW, here's the bad part.....
You have to AUTOPROGRAM it EACH and EVERY time when you switch from Antenna to Cable and vice versa....
It MAY TAKE 20 to 30 minutes searching for Digital stations....

My antenna is attached to my house. Sometimes it doesn't get the best reception. I just wondered what else I could do to "beef it up" a little, or something. Maybe put it on a pole? Or, is there a better antenna on the market?
Go to antennaweb.com. You can find what type of antenna will work best. I use a multidirectional antenna that gets stations 50 miles away with no problem.

I very much want to switch to satellite tv with how expensive my cable provider is. However, we cannot get local channels in my area. If I was to purchase an antenna can I use it on a satellite box on a regular tv (not analog)?
All the new satellite receivers for Dish Network, Directv, and FTA have a built in off air antenna input. Look on the back, it says antenna in. These other guys don't know what they're talking about. You can connect a regular antenna and if pointed right, get HD Locals.
Go here: http://www.sathookup.com/satellite-netwo rk/free-to-air-satellite.php if you need help installing an outdoor OTA Over the Air antenna.
And if so, would it be better than an indoor antenna?
To receive television signals off the air, no. The dish is designed to receive the satellite signals somewhere in the gigahertz range. The air signals are no where near the same frequency. Also, the LNB in the satellite dish will not work for the air signals.
Even if it would work, the dish is a very narrow antenna. It has to be pointed directly at the transmitter. This would limit you to one channel unless you had a method of re-aiming the dish when you wanted to receive another channel in a different direction.

The broadcast tower will be offline through the end of the week. Those persons and services receiving KALB or NALB from an off air antenna will not be able to receive programming from either of these channels until the broadcast tower is restored. We are working to enhance our digital signal. We have removed the analog antenna from our tower and are placing our digital antenna on top. This work is expected to be completed by September 11th and will improve our off air signal strength considerably. Thank you for your patience.
