How to connect a bi-quad WiFi antenna connecting to wireless router?
Fractal Quad antenna - #14/2 AWG wire used

I am in the process of making a bi-quad WiFi antenna and instead of hooking it up to a pcmia card i was wondering if i can connect the bi-quad WiFi antenna directlly to a wireless router?
well you see i was going with the setup thats is here

If the router has an antenna that can be unscrewed and replaced, then yes, you can. However, you have to check what kind of connectors are on the antenna cable. Most are RP-SMA, a few are RP-TNC, and there's the odd other type....

Fractal Quad antenna - attaching coaxial cable

i am winding a piece of wire in to a square. using dow rods, 2 of them crossed, and binded in the center. ok i need lets say 20 inches on all 4 sides. to make 80 inches of wire, but i thought my 2 cross rods would be 20 inches but i put em together and now all 4 sides only measure bout 14 inhes, ha im no math genius, help please i need to get it right the 1s t time thanx

Fractal Quad antenna - support made of PVC tube fittings

Im confused by all the different designs. Shielded, unshielded, lip, no lip. The unshielded has the element soldered directly to the N connector. The shielded design shows the element soldered to coax cable which is crimped to a copper pipe. It shows an N connector at the end of the cable but Im confused as too if it is built into the cable or if it is separate like the one I have. Its hard to explain. Also Im not sure what type of pigtail I need. I have a Netgear WG311 v3 PCI adapter. I have looked at all the websites online and they all have crappy directions or I just cant tell because Im a noob.

You may want to check the ARRL site for information. (That is the Amateur Radio Relay League) they have designs and good information. http://www.arrl.org

The center connection at the antenna will connect on one side to the shield and on the other side to the center conductor. Here is one with a good shot of the center connect.

There are several other designs that are on

Most of these will help you understand antenna basics.

What connector you put on the end opposite the antenna is up to you. You can match it to your adapter if the coax is not too heavy, otherwise you want to use a pigtail to reach the last few inches so that the strain on the adapter connector is not too high for the card. Most of these little short pigtails will go from N female to TNC or RSMA etc to match your adapter card. If you have a long run of coax from the card to the antenna you need to use LMR400 (heavy but low loss) and then add a pigtail.

You might also check around and see if you can find a local Ham Radio Operator that might help.. usually they understand antennas very well.

What kind of cable must be used with an outdoor antenna (RG-59, RG-6, RG-6 Quad Shield )?
Bi-Quad with fly

I'm trying to purchase an outdoor antenna and cable to Connect it to the HDTV Digital Converter Box; but I found out that there are different antennas (VHF, UHF and even FM class Antenna)

Also, different kind of cable to connect the Antenna to the TV/Digital Converter Box. These are RG-59 Coax Cable , RG-6 Coax Cable and RG-6 Coax Quad Shield Cable.

Can somebody help me with these options.

Thank you so much for your help!

For TV, you need a good quality VHF/UHF antenna. RG-6 should be good enough for most installations. The quad shield is a better choice to reduce interference, however that usually is not a problem in home installations so it's really not worth the extra money.

RG-59 is good for the cables from the wall to the TV because it's thinner and easier to hide, however you can just do the whole installation in RG-6.

Make sure you properly ground the antenna for lightning protection!

What is the most efficient transmitting antenna configuration...other than a dish?
rectangular quad antenna 2m

I had thought it was the quad, but I dimly recall a magazine article that said NASA now uses some bizarre bent-wire shape

Nearly all antennae are 95% efficient or more, in terms of the electrical power at the input and the power radiated.

The key issues are: directivity pattern &/or directivity index, its input impedance, and the frequency response of the previous two.

A transmit system can be inefficient with a poor antenna, but the energy is lost inside the amplifier and cable, not the antenna.

A high directivity allows the same amount of radiated power to be focused into a smaller region of space.

  • The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Temporary ATamp;T Antenna Installed To ...

AT&T users venturing into the Quad may no longer have to worry about dropped calls or spotty cell phone service starting next month.

A cell on wheels -- a trailer containing signal transmission and reception equipment known as a COW -- has recently been set up next to Cabot House's Barnard Hall, located on the southwest corner of the Quad.

The "visually obtrusive" COW, operational on Sept. 1, serves as a temporary solution for providing reliable AT&T wireless service in the Quad until a permanent antenna is installed next fall, following city and state approval, said Zachary M. Gingo '98, director of Faculty of Arts and Sciences' Facilities Management and Operations. The...
