Antennas Answers
I recently bought a television antenna amplifier. I do have a hdtv converter box, where do I install the amplifier? before the convert or box or after.also
can I run two TVS off one converter or box?
Ideally, the only good place to install an antenna amplifier is at the antenna itself. If you're talking about an indoor antenna, it goes between the antenna and your digital converter (if that's what you have). Generally, amplifiers are ineffective with indoor antennas unless they are an integral part of the antenna design. But you can try it.
On a digital converter, you could connect one TV via the coaxial output jack and another via the A-V jacks. You could also try connecting the coaxial output jack to a 2-port splitter and then running coaxial cable to the antenna connectors of two TVs.
The downside of operating two TVs from one digital converter is that both sets will only get the same channel--whichever digital channel you've selected with the digital converter's remote. Your TV is left on the same channel full time (analog 3 or 4, depending on the output of your converter).
Also, be advised that your digital converter is not an "HDTV converter box." The output of the converter is analog SD only. You need an HDTV to get HD.
Investing lots of money in purchasing a modern TV set we often are not aware of some factors, which provide qualitative reception of television ...
I have a 13'' TV in my bedroom, no cable...just the four basic networks.
I went out a bought the Phillips Superior Def. 50dB amplification for $40. But, it's not working much better than just my regular antenna.
I just want the signal to be greater so I can get all the four channels without hassling with the antennas. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might help??
p.s. the signals are VHF according to antennaweb.org
Your fundamental problem is your lack of correct understanding of what an amplifier does.
If the signal entering the antenna is very low and noisy the amp will amplify both the signal and the noise equally.
It doesn't clean up the signal.
As a simple example... go to your FM radio and detune your favorite station until its noisy.
Sounds bad rite ??
Now , turn up the volume control really loud.
Does it sound any better ? ,
And thats what amplification does.
Your solution is to use a proper external antenna.
An amp is only intended for increasing the signal strength of an otherwise good quality signal.

I just bought a Phillips UHF/VHF/FM PreAmp (Model SWS2083W/17) for my antenna. What is the max. length of coaxial (75 ohm) or twinlead (300 ohm) cable I can have between the PreAmp at the antenna and the Amplifier that plugs into the wall outlet?
Lots of variables there. It depends on:
1) How good the cable is (how lossy it is)
2) What frequencies you are trying to receive (the higher the frequency, the more the loss in the cable)
3) How noisy the pre-amp is.
4) How strong the stations are.
5) How good the antenna is, and how well it's pointed
6) Whether you have line-of-sight on the transmitting towers.
7) How far away you are from the transmitting towers.
8) How good your TV receiver is
Sorry for no "pat" answers... you just have to do the measurements and/or run the numbers if you can get ahold of them.

Connect the cable of the antenna to input jack of the amplifier, then connect the amplifier's built-in cable to the antenna input on TV/ converter box
Turn a TV with spotty reception into one with crisp and clear reception
Preserves signal purity with Extremely Low-Noise (ELN) circuitry
Boost the reception of your digital or analog signal television
Enhances the performance of passive antennas in challenging areas of reception
I bought the biggest outdoor antenna I could find, a rotator, and a 28 db amplifier that mounts half on the antenna and half inside that plugs in. At first I was getting every channel that I could pull in, then the signal just went bad, so I took out the amp and bada-bing, most of the channels back. So I went out and bought the same amp again and got all the channels back for about a month, then guess what, signal loss. So I decided to buy a 13db amp that just goes inside, hey I got all my channels back, for about a month, dang-it. PLEASE help me.
Is your antenna mast grounded?
Is your coax grounded through a grounding block?
Until you verify that you have done the obvious, there is little point in speculating as to the cause of the problem.
I have installed a TV Card on my PC but in my room there is no plug for the main antenna of the house. I dont want to have wires coming in and out of my room so i have bought an indoors antenna with an amplifier.
The quality is get is mediocre.. Are there any tricks or suggestions to make the reception qualit better? I tried the foil trick but that doesnt work.
Anyone?
Built in amplifier was a good choice for tabletop antennas......
If you want BETTER reception, the ONLY choice you have is an OUTDOOR antenna with a 20 db RF amplifier connected.....
An 8 Bay bowtie antenna is about the best choice.....
But the guys at Radio Shack can suggest the proper choice for your area.....
It's a Saturday project......
