a car antenna is just a single pole but a tv has to have two poles to receive the signal

The difference in design is in part due to the range of frequency's which each antenna is designed to accept and the normal orientation of the signal wave.

any kind really, they all pretty much perform the same inless u get a signal booster. Or if you can get your hands on the kind the old school limos had. There really top notch but I forget who there made by. Hope that helps

I have my old car deck mounted under my desk to run computer speakers, however the spare car antenna int he corner leaves a lot to be desired for FM reception. I have a large tv/fm antenna on the roof of the house, I was wondering if those can be hooked to each other?

More specifically - What's the impedance of a standard car antenna? I assume the rooftop one is 75ohms. Will I need a balun or anything else to do this?

Yes. The outside antenna should pick up better then one inside. Add a splitter to the 75 ohm cable. You then run a 75 ohm cable from the splitter to your radio. You will have to add a car radio plug in to the end of the cable, so it will plug into your radio. If you can't find a plug, then you can take 5 or 6 inch's of the plug in wire off a junk car. Peel the insulation back to expose the center wire and the outer grounding sheath. Connect the two inner wires together, and connect the two outer sheaths together. Do not let the inner and outer touch each other or your reception will suffer. Insulate, wrap with tape, and you should be done. In the old days, people would use a straightened coat hanger to replace a broken antenna on a car, until they could buy one. Make sure your outside antenna is grounded, or else electricity could come in through the wire (during a lighting storm) and damage your radio. I hope this helps.
