I have a TV w/1 coax antenna input. I want to use my TV's internal tuner for Cable TV AND over-the-air High Definition. Right now, I have a cheap switch that allows me to select which of these signals I am sending to the tuner.
Problem is, it's a real pain to get up and down off the couch to operate the manual switch. I thought about combining cable and high def signals, but I've heard that there may be some problems with distortion. Anyone know of a good way to combine HDTV antenna and cable TV? Or - Anyone know if a way to make switching an easier process?
I am up for a recommendation on an external tuner that will remotely switch between inputs, or tune and line up what's available from each of these signals?
** I've seen that TIVO and Direct TV have DVR's that combine information from two signals. The box and TV guide service may not be an option for us (long story).
Your fundamental problem is that off-the-air channels and cable channels are in diff. frequencies (the lower numbers match but the higher number's don't). That's why when you scan for channels you specify air or cable.
So, it works, but you may be missing some channels, unless you have really basic cable.
All new digital set-top boxes have an off-the-air antenna input that allows you to combine both off-the-air and cable or satellite reception. So, my suggestion is to try to get a set-top box from your cable provider. You can use the antenna for HD and the set-top box for the other channels/

I run a hotel with 25 rooms in a remote area. We don't have cable tv or anything. My wife plays piano, my kids sing and I do a bit of magic. We want to add our channel and maybe a couple of others from the local community to the signal from the rooftop antenna and then send it to the rooms to be channel selectable. We have antenna channels 3, 5, 11 and 31 so any others would be ok.
What I can tell you is that this is actually pretty easy to do. It's just harder to find a source for this equipment any more. There are, or were, devices to mix different tv antennas that received different channels together into one signal. Of course, it doesn't have to be an antenna. The device will mix different tv signals together for common distribution. A search on the web did produce one site that has what you want. It may be more than you want, but it's below.
Good luck.
I recently purchased a Digital TV Converter box for my analog TV, my antenna is not that strong, and a recommendation on the RCA instruction is for a Smart Antenna. There are two inputs on the back, one for a regular antenna (coaxial), and another for the smart antenna( looks like and RJ telephone type input). Went to Target and Best Buy the antenna's that were receommended have the coaxial input and seem to require and electrical plug. Does anyone know the name, model of a good smart antenna, and does it make a difference if the cable is coaxial or not.
Thanks
A smart antenna will have coaxial and a power cord probably, and an RJ plug, which commands the antenna to change direction.
If all your broadcasters are in one direction, you only need a decent unidirectional antenna.

EchoStar Will Offer $40 Digital Converters For TV | DISH Network ...
Whether you are aware of it or not, old analog television sets will no longer be able to receive any programming without a digital converter after February 17, 2009. That’s the day a new federal law mandates that all television broadcasts in the United States be digital.
With a digital converter attached to an analog TV, you should be able to receive the new digital signals in your area just fine. EchoStar, the company behind Dish Network plans to offer digital converters for sale for $40
Since the federal government is offering $40 coupons for people to use for their purchase of digital converters, it will be possible for many people to obtain one of these new converters from EchoStar at no cost.
