I'm in a gated community. It won't allow TV antennas on roofs (can't blame 'em). Soooo.. I need to get small, high powered, (witha powered amplified?) antenna for indoors or possibly some unobtrusive spot outdoors. I went to antennaweb.org. It said that I needed a "Medium, Multidirectional Antenna." Any ideas on which one? I would be willing to spend up to $50 for a high end, highly effective antenna. I just don't want to have to deal with a young sales clerk who really is not knowledgeable about such stuff. I am wonder too if I placed "it" in my attic would I get better reception than placing it inside my home?..... You guys are awesome. Thank you in advance for your help... fuzzy channeling in fresno.
First, Federal law permits you to have an antenna, no matter what the "communities" rules are. see link.
Second, the higher you place the antenna, the better. So the attic would be probably better.
Third, the frequencies and power levels of the presently broadcasting digital stations, in many cases, are not permanent. Many of them are changing frequencies on 2/18/09-some are even going back to the frequencies that their analog counterparts are leaving. this could mean that a solution that works now might be partially undone after the switchover.
Fourth, I recommend that you try a couple of antennas from Radio Shack-both in store and on line. From the reports I've read, there is a lot of trial and error in getting this done. The statement about multidirectional leads me to believe that not all of the transmitters are in the same direction. This could further complicate things. Your local proprietors might be able to advise you on what antennas others are using in your area.
Fifth, there are people pushing digital or HDTV antennas-there's no such thing. The frequencies being used by digital TV are in the same range as for analog TV. That's what determines the characteristics of an antenna-the frequency range, not the form of modulation, digital or analog.
Good luck!

A video guide showing how to find available HDTV channels and choose the best HDTV antenna for a specific location. If you want to receive free ...
Subscribing to Cable TV services has become more expensive in my country in Singapore! It costs about US$50 a month for the full package! No kidding!
Therefore, I decide it was not worth paying for it anymore and decide to install a satellite dish instead in order to watch hundreds of tv channels worldwide.
I saw several satellite dishes on sale from ebay but I'm not sure if it will work if I purchase a satellite dish from ebay! I'm afraid it will not allow me to receive hundreds of channels worldwide and just act like an ordinary local antenna!
Is there any genuine satellite dish I can get from the Internet to receive hundreds of tv channels worldwide? I don't really mind about the price if I'm able to watch Satellite TV for life after a one-time payment!
I was not looking for any Satellite PC software! I just want it live on my television!
Your recommendations are greatly appreciated!

WHen I go to a friend's cabin, which is about 110 miles north of me. I bring along a Black & White TV up there (I picked it up at a garage sale for only $2.00) and it doesn't work to well here even though I have it by a window in my house, and all I have to use for it is rabbit ears, and a special antenna that does fine tuning, by turning a know to pull in stations better. When I bring it up to my friend's cabin, which is out in the country, and kind of our in the boondocks, I get stations very clear, and some of them are even out of state, and I use the same antennas as described above. I can get both VHF, and UHF stations clear, and I don't get the stations as clear as I can get them here. Why is that, is it the conditions or is it just the location of my old TV?
This is a Samsung TV, 13 inch Black & White set, and it was manufactured in 1988, and has two dials (one for the UHF, and the other for VHF, and it also has a knob to turn it on, and adjust the volume. This set is almost 20 years old.
The cabin i bet is high in elevation... So your rabbit ear antenna is higher than any bulidings and likely other hills and mountains around, so it can pick up the signal better because the signal is not getting blocked by bulidings, mountains, etc...

I was promised free install and four rooms by direct TV if i signed a 1 year contract. I was to pay $99 instantly on my charge card but they would give me a refund upon applying for it after my first bill. It was to be $49 per mo.
They sent the installer out to the condo and he refused to do the install free. He wanted $60 per room or would not do it ($240) we refused and called the direct TV people back and they said it was the problem of the phone sales retailer that sold us the service, not theirs. I called him and he told me It was the problem with the TV antenna installer contractor and not their problem. He said I should work out the problem with the installer. I said I have no contract with the installer, you do. I said I have a contract with you for free install and he said he was just the retailer and the contract was with direct TV company. they say no it is not their contract until it is installed. etc etc. i am fed up. I would cancel the service but I do not even have it
BEWARE THESE PHONE SALESMEN. DO NOT DEAL WITH RETAILERS. ONLY DIRECT WITH THE TV SERVICE COMPANY.
The install was a very normal one on a new condo building that was previously set up for cable and not direct TV antenna system. The runs were not long or anything special required. just some wire and jacks and the antenna.
Yes we have had problems too. Not anything to do with install tho. We had had directv for a few months. We also had agreed to the one year lock in. We were having problems with reception and called them to complain. They sent a tech out more than once. At approximately the 3rd time out, the tech said that it had something to do with the equipment and that he had a lot of complaints about that particular set top. He suggested that we cancel because there was nothing he could do. I called the company and explained our situation and told them what the tech had said and the woman on the phone agreed to let us cancel. Unfortunately, I didn't get her name. They disconnected it that same day. When we got our bill, there was a charge of $244.00 for an early cancellation fee. I called and complained about it and they said that they had no record of me calling and complaining and that the tech would not have said what he did. To this day, I have not paid that bill and now its gone to collections. Oh well, can't do it, won't do it. Will never, ever, ever recommend directtv to anyone.
After initial setup, the ten year old analog TVs received most channels, but never close to all the possible stations. After a week both began to lose stations and now one gets no signal at all, and the other only receives 3 channels. I have gone up on the roof to realign the antenna one tv is connected to and changed or moved the set top antenna on the other tv with no effect. We purchased a better quality set top UHF/VHF/FM antenna at a garage sale, with no effect either. Since the conversion was clearly and widely advertised as one in which the previous antennas would work, an HD antenna shouldn't fix the problem. We can watch DVDs and old videos that we have connected up to the converter box as well, so the box itself is at least marginally working.
Lots of misstatements in your post.
First, there is no such thing as a HDTV converter box. They are digital converters. They do not provide an high def picture.
Secondly, the statement "We purchased a better quality set top UHF/VHF/FM antenna at a garage sale, with no effect either". Why do you say it is a better quality?
The fact is, *ANY* indoor antenna is lousy and replacing a lousy antenna with another lousy antenna clearly accomplishes nothing. Price is also not a good indicator of anything.
Fourthly, the statement "the conversion was clearly and widely advertised as one in which the previous antennas would work" is not entirely true. They said you at least had a good starting point of being able to receive a signal but they never implied the reception would be exactly the same because we all know it is not.
Fifthly, the statement "an HD antenna shouldn't fix the problem". At least I agree with this one, but the simple fact is there is no such thing as an HD antenna and I do recognize that many places are selling them. The simple fact is what is important for antennas is the frequency range (UHF or UHF/VHF) and the forward gain.
Absolutely nothing in your post indicated to me that you had any methodology at all of looking at your antennas and evaluating if they were adequate for the task you expected of them. So instead of basing our plans on falsehoods and bad information, lets use some science.
Put your address or at least your zip code in here:
http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.asp x
If you keep clicking through, you will eventually end up with a list of stations in your area where the left most column is color coded antenna information. Print that out and come back here if you would like and I'd be glad to provide more specific help, if we know some of your info. There is a lot of good info on these web sites and I've given you some of them. Making an evaluation of the antennas you have versus the color code of the antenna is difficult, but if you click on the antenna pictures and compare with what you have, you will get an idea.
For an antenna lots of elements and a large complex antenna are good things for getting a strong signal. The antenna must be able to receive both UHF and VHF signals.
There is also a lot of good info on http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/info.aspx?p age=indoor
