What type of power and signal-transmission is more common in "an older land-line telephone system" with old and outdated copper wires?
%I am trying to determine how the signals are sent through the telephone lines in my alley.
I do know and have experience operating a CABLE TELEVISION system; where the signals came from a master antenna via my head-end, to the distribution cables throughout my neighborhood.
Is the Land-line Telephone system the same (operating from a "head-end" and distributing throughout the cables)? or, because this is a TWO-WAY system, how is this different?
(I am not comparing ANALOG vs. DIGITAL signals - I am merely researching how these signals are powered through my alley.)
Thanks for technical help.
P.S. I have my degree in Commercial Electronics, so I know the difference between SIGNAL and VOLTAGE.
The basic analog signal is your voice which is transmitted over what is called a tip and ring line. Standing idle the tip and ring (pair) measures -48 volts DC (and yes that is negative 48 volts DC), when you take the receiver off hook it causes a direct short on the line reducing the voltage to -24 volts DC on each wire.
When you depress or dial a number it sends out another signal called dual tone multi frequency (DTMF), this signal received by the local phone company exchange office located in your area and will decipher the DTMT digits, sending it to the number attempting to be called.
If the calling attempt is successful an inverting process takes place at the Central Office sending a AC (that's Alternating Current for you people with degrees) burst to the receiving phone. This burst is alternating (on and off) at approximately 90 -105 volts AC (yes it's really an AC electrical event with very low amperes).
When the party being called picks up the receiver the AC is dropped and replaced with - 24 volts DC (the circuit is complete between caller and the answerer). The -24 volts DC is considered talk battery as Bell Labs discovered many decades ago that negative battery was a much cleaner talk battery as oppose to standard (or what you would consider standard battery) DC battery.
The battery provided to your home phone comes from you local exchange whether it be transformed or standard batteries (true story). Although I have never asked I think it would be safe to say the AC burst is originally provided by you local power company and stepped down at the Central Office.
You will have to ask for details on the digital phone, but you should already have a grasp on that being you are experienced in CATV.
I have a analog tv tuner card for my PC but the channels come in fuzzy at best. I am using an amplified antenna and don't have cable(nor do I want it). I do have it on a desk with a desktop stereo system, cordless telephone, monitor, and printer. I also have another tv nearby using rabbit ears. Could something be interfering with the reception?
Tuner cards are not particularly sensitive-meaning they need a strong signal to function properly. My guess is that your signal is to low in power.

Hello, The thing is that I like so to communicate with people , I have some of them who liked to call
& talk much like hours ! yes some like to take advices and the other like to chat
and few thinking of me as Dr.phill !!!
So each time when I feel that this call will take long time I try to call them back from my home telephone that I rather using upon cellphones ,Well it feel much safer to my ear & no antenna frequency around my head !
But the tel handset as you all know its not that comfortable to hold on to for a long time !
Thats why I was thinking if there is by any chance a solution for this matter , such as using a wired telephone headset system with Noise canceling microphone that eliminates most background noise same as cell phones microphones system , or some thing like a Telephone Headset Amplifier that you have the option to control your mic & speakers volume , I am still confused which is better or how can I be able to chose from all these products !
I was thinking since that
I was so satisfied with my Nokia wired headset (hand free)
I like to know that there is a way to use it by contacting to my home telephone of course using a specific kine of tel model of having sort of adapter or a converter that make it easy to any one to use his home telephone and talking through his own cellphone hand free set !
I am not sure if that is from my imagination from all that techs info I read often or this kind of products are really out there ??
Please some help or an idea !
Thank you so much
I went to the Source and purchased a Nexxtech handset/headset switch. I also purchased headset that plugs into my cell phones. You take the switch and unplug the handset from at the telephone. Plug the switch into the telephone and plug the handset into the switch. You also plug in the headset to the switch. It uses a battery, so unless you are using the headset, you leave it on handset. My Nexxtech headset has a mute/on switch and a volume control. It works well for me.

i dont know whats this wi-fi all abt. 10 min ago i was using broadband. now a telephone guy came home and fixed the wi fi system which seems to have a antenna. what is a wifi , how is it use full. can i use a desktop and also use a laptop at the same time to connect to the net?
If your desktop and/or laptops have wifi receivers then you can use them anywhere in the house that gets the signal. You can purchase USB wifi adapters too. I use a USB one all the time for computers I am building that need to go online, I don't have to hook up any wires.
I just bought a house with this garage door opener in it. After the first few days of living in the house the garage door opener started to not respond to the remote. Changed the battery, still nothing. Right after the problem occured I had limited range but it would sometimes still respond when I held the remote right up to the antenna, now it doesn't respond at all. I have reset the code with the remote using the "learn" system and it won't even "learn" anymore. The wall button for the opener still works perfectly fine though. So i'm sure that the motor itself is still functioning properly.
I've read about possible interference issues that could cause potential problems with the remote/motor configuration but don't have anything electrical in the garage at all. We just had Directv, cable internet, and telephone set up, could any of those cause intereference? The problems began to occur within a day of those being installed. Thanks a bunch!
Sounds like interference or your antenna on the unit is disconnected or broken. Goto Sears.com There you can ask an expert and get an email response in 1-2 days as well as order any part you will need for the repair.
