Can anyone recommend an antenna that will pull in uhf television stations?
Interesting UHF antenna

I am getting rid of my cable service and I want to put up an antenna that will bring in the local stations about 20 miles away. I have an older tv set(not high definition). Can anyone tell me where I can purchased a uhf antenna.

Get a set of rabbit ears that also has a UHF loop on it. That's all you need, and Radio Shack will have it.

What is the best UHF antenna for receiving distant TV stations?
23rddecnzquake

To receive UHF signals in the 50 to 75 mile range.

There is no best antenna by manufacturer. Sure they have claims that there model is the best. The best antenna is one that is outdoors, 30 feet or more above the ground level, and rated for more distance than the station you are trying to receive. It also helps if you use one complete piece of coax from end to end. Patching together parts of cables just reduces the signal more (3 dB per connection). You should get a new coax cable each time you buy a new antenna or at least every 10 years (more often if it is damaged by high winds). And you should replace the lightning arrestor and wire to the ground rod along with the cable (to protect your TV investment). For your intended range I would get an antenna that is rated for at least 100 miles for UHF channels.

I herd on the news last night if you have a UHF loop antenna you don't need a digital converter box ?
11thdecuscs4oo

Is this true they said the UHF antenna is capable of receiving a digital signal,

Digital signals that are broadcast over the air are received with the UHF part of a regular antenna - including high definition digital. However, if you have an analog tv and no digital TUNER, you still need a digital converter box to convert your tv's tuner to digital.
New tv's with a digital tuner, only need a UHF antenna, to get signals broadcast over the air.

What is the difference between a VHF and UHF antenna?

Do i need to buy one to get the channels on my converter box or can i use the old rabbit ears i still have?

What he said is true. UHF simply uses shorter elements. Next year, all TV stations will be switching to UHF channels for digital broadcasting. Many, or most, already have and are broadcasting on dual channels right now. Your rabbit ears will continue to work with your converter, just as it has with the UHF channels now.

After the big switch, there will be no VHF channels. All the stations on VHF will be cut off. Eventually, in a year or two, some stations MAY return to VHF, broadcasting in the digital format. There are fewer technical problems in VHF than UHF. But it's pretty much assured that no stations will ever return to VHF-Lo (ch 2- 6) as it's an outmoded band with its own set of problems. Any that do return, will most likely be on VHF-Hi (ch 7 - 13). Your rabbit ears will work, with your converter, as it always has for VHF.

Antennas don't care whether it's digital or analog. They just pick up the signal. It's the tuner that cares about digital and analog. So don't let slick salesmen try telling you that you need some new 'digital' antenna. He's gonna end up selling you the same thing you've already got.

Will older UHF antenna work for HDTV signals?
my_antenna_roof

Have a 10 year old round channel master with inline amp that works great here in the boonies for UHF channels, is this the same frequency HDTV is broadcast?

terestrial HDTV signals are broadcast in the UHF bandwidth so it is suposed to work fine, however sometimes the digital signals don't get indoors so well. Outdoor antennas seem to work better.
The Consumer Electronics Association has a website dedicated to helping select the correct antenna for your area.
I have included it in the link.
