Want to improve the reception on a basic vhf/uhf tv antenna, whats the easiest way?
TRY ARGOS OR MAPLIN
This antenna is made from such materials available in any home :-)
At the present I have an outdoor 8 bay bow tie uhf TV antenna. The 75 ohm coaxial is soldered directly to the to leads--the cable wire and shield respectively. I am getting a pretty good signal now. Would a transformer make it better or worse. This is strictly for digital tv
Analog or digital doesn't matter. Antennas only care about frequency (channel), not what's on the channel.
Not knowing what antenna you have, it's hard to say for sure. However, I have never seen an antenna connected like that. Likely, you do need a balun. If there is an impedance mismatch between the antenna / feed line / receiver, some of the signal will be reflected at the point of the mismatch and will never get to the receiver.

i have an outdoor vhf/uhf combo antenna, first the leads are touching the mast of the antenna and i was wondering if this would cause resistance in my signal,2nd i have the lead for the vhf on one side of the transformer and the uhf lead on the other side, one side is 300ohm and the other is 75ohm;which side is for vhf and which side is for uhf?or can i put both on one side?the reason for asking is-i have really good signal from an hdtv broadcast station, but another station from close to same location hasn't made the total switch to hdtv and their signal is poor. hope someone can help...thanks
digital is now going in UHF brand, so I would ditch a VHF antenna because its really bulky and UHF tend to be smaller antenna's. Right now channel master 4 bays are really good UHF antennas. Just google the channel master4221HD antenna, also a good pre amp will give you a boost.

To receive UHF signals in the 50 to 75 mile range.
There is no best antenna by manufacturer. Sure they have claims that there model is the best. The best antenna is one that is outdoors, 30 feet or more above the ground level, and rated for more distance than the station you are trying to receive. It also helps if you use one complete piece of coax from end to end. Patching together parts of cables just reduces the signal more (3 dB per connection). You should get a new coax cable each time you buy a new antenna or at least every 10 years (more often if it is damaged by high winds). And you should replace the lightning arrestor and wire to the ground rod along with the cable (to protect your TV investment). For your intended range I would get an antenna that is rated for at least 100 miles for UHF channels.
The VHF antenna is built into the TV...no connections on back of the set.
You need to buy a freeview box which has an RF output on the back.....then you would need to do a scan on the B&W television to pick up the RF signal from the digital freeview box to the Television.
an RF cable looks like this >> http://www.mediacollege.com/images/ireso urce/ivt/twovcrs/cableRF.jpg
just make sure the digital box has a RF output on it, it should then beable to tune into the box by doing a scan.
BUT APART FROM THAT!! WHY YOU GOT A B&W TV STILL!!!
sorry hehe for shouting, but hey they are fairly cheap now the flatscreens and already have in built digital.....
prices from 97 quid

but i would maybe buy one a little bit more expensive than this one i put as an example based on quality of what you want....
