My new weather radio doesn't get reception in my area. Is there an extender I can buy?

It works perfect with a homemade foil antenna but looks awful. Is there one I can buy to attach to the existing antenna that will look better? Thanks.

Make sure the antenna is fully extended and vertical. Try putting it near a window. My weather radio is a bit scratchy at times but I have found if I move the radio around it usually gets better.

There really is no extender though. The antenna that comes with it is designed for it.

Also try to see if you can pick up other weather channels - another one may be stronger in your area. Most weather radios have a way to tune different channels.

Does a CB radio with WX need a special antenna?

I'm looking at getting a COBRA 29 WX ST radio but was told that I would need a special antenna to hear the weather. Is that true and can someone point me in the direction of a decent one?

I wouldn't think so, an antenna will have to be resonant in the CB range, for transmitting, it doesn't have to be resonant in the range where you're getting the Weather from.

For the middle of the CB frequencies, a quarter wavelength would be electrically 8.6 feet.

For the NWS weather bulletins, they broadcast between 162.4 and 162.5 MHz, for which a quarter wavelength would be around 1.44 feet. This means that a quarter wavelength at 27.185 MHz, the center of the CB band in the US, would be just about a wavelength and a half at 162.4 MHz, the bottom of the weather band.

For a receiving antenna, that should be fine.

For receiving antennas, close counts, adding one more to the list of horseshoes and hand grenades.

Can the same antennae be used for an Am/Fm/ Stereo as a weather radio on a boat at the same time?

(I'm assuming your VHF/weather radio will have transmit capability as well.)

Yes it can, but the caveat here is that you require a switch, similar to:
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path =-1|344|295760|299311&id=70626
(This one is manufactured by Shakespeare)
to prevent blowing up your stereo.

As well, performance of your marine VHF will unlikely be quite as good as not having the switch installed. Separate antennas are the optimum solution of course, but if space is an issue, the single antenna and switch may provide an acceptable compromise.

Good Luck!

sirius radio antenna set up...?

So i just got a sirius radio, and i noticed that you can't put that antenna on the dash well you shouldn't is what it says on there site. My question is would it still be all right to put it on anyways on the dash will i get no siganl? poor signal? or will it catch on fire? I'm also wounder if i was to put it outside how is it in the weather cold and heat? Thanks

No, it will not catch fire.

I have mine in the center of my dashboard, and it works great. Don't put it on the side, or the A-pillar will block it's reception. Put it as far forward as you can, in the center of the dash.

please help

The Weather Radio System currently uses 7 different frequencies for their stations. Thus, you have 7 different settings. The only ones that will come in are the closest ones. The others are too far away to get proper reception and that is why they have mostly static. You may want to look up which transmitter is the closest to you and make sure that the one you choose actually activates for the county you live in.

  • New FM antenna will produce stronger signal - WGEM.com: Quincy ...

Quincy, IL (WGEM) -- Crews traveled nearly 600 feet up in the air Wednesday to install a new FM radio antenna on WGEM's transmitter tower.

Precession Communications crews from Oklahoma have been working on the tower all week prepping for today's installation and removing old antennas.

The new $30,000 antenna will send out a stronger FM signal for WGEM's News/Talk 105 station. The signal should now reach as far as Macomb.

Even though the new antenna is installed, WGEM engineers say it will be a couple weeks before the stronger signal is transmitting over the air.
