What is the best type of omni directional wi-fi antenna?
wi-fi

I am trying to figure out what is the best type of omni directional antenna for outdoor wi-fi use.

I am gonna be making a hot spot and want to know the best type of omni that will give me the best range and throughput.

I will be using a either a wireless-b or g router for the access point. I know g gives the best possible speed but does the range compare to wireless b at the longer ranges?

Please give as much knowledge as possible.

Thanks

You are way ahead of yourself. The first thing you need to do is a site survey. You need to figure out how much coverage do you want or need (WLAN cell radius). Will the cell cover users just outside or inside as well ? You need to identify holes of coverage due to mulipath, interference and any neighboring WLAN's.

Also as the operating frequency of the increases from 2.4 GHz to 5GHz there is additional path loss. This results in a smaller cell radius. While it is good that you have thought about antenna diversity there are a lot of other factors that you need to consider for optimal performance of your WLAN.

I got the wi-fi antenna on my ipod touch sticky, what do I do now?

I got the wi-fi antenna on my ipod touch sticky, and now my ipod won't pick up wifi signals. What do I do now?
I have already washed off the stickiness, but the wifi won't connect

Try washing it? Just get an eye glass cleaning wipe or something.

Do you have to download a program on your computer to use your Wi-fi antenna?

I am thinking of getting Wi-fi but was not sure if you had to download a program on your computer in order to use it.I can not because my cd drive is broken.

If you're buying a new computer/laptop then they usually come equipped with wi-fi. But, if you have an older computer then you will have to upload a program but the program usually comes with the new antenna (since your cd drive is broken try to buy one that you go to their site to download the program; i.e. - when you buy an iPod it doesn't come with a cd, you go to apple and download the iTunes program.)

How do I build a homemade wi-fi antenna?

My friend lives in a city where there is free wireless internet on the Main street. She lives a few blocks away. I've heard rumors that you can build a home-made antenna that will allow you to connect to the internet from a farther distance than you could with standard equipment. Is this true? Any hints on how to go about it?

I read on slashdot.org you can make one with a pringles can, but I think you have to put it on the transmitter and point it towards your computer, not from your computer to the transmitter.

google "pringles can antenna" or check on slashdot.

What is the best Wi-Fi antenna for a Dell Lattitude Laptop?

I have a Dell Lattitude Laptop that automatically seeks out wireless signals. I am picking up the wireless signal at work but it's very weak. I know they make USB Antenna's for laptops but I don't have any idea what the best kind would be.
The wireless router is on the 3rd floor and I'm on the first. What do I need to plug into my laptop to pick up a better signal?
Thanks.

adding another wireless antenna would not help. The fact that you are getting a signal (albeit, weak) tells you that your laptop is more than capable. If there is an elevator in your building, chances are, you'll get a weaker signal. You can get another WiFi router and plug it into your ethernet jack.. chances are, if you are on the same network, you'll be able to get the same signal this time on a much higher and faster rate.

  • Wi-Fire – WiFi antenna promises extended range - The Red Ferret ...

The Wi-Fire WiFi Antenna is designed to provide an extended range for your Wi-Fi connection, so you can theoretically access the Net wirelessly from up to 1000 feet away from your router. The guys at the company sent me one to test out, and so I put it up against the latest and greatest Netgear Wireless N router/USB dongle combo , which is supposed to be the bees knees in terms of range and effectiveness.

Installing the Wi-Fire was easy, and in minutes I was testing the thing out on an aging Tosh Tecra I have lying around. The result was a tie. I found that the Wi-Fire and Netgear dongle both gave me around 2 bars when used out in my back garden, which usually fails to grab any signal at all. So in one way the Wi-Fire definitely works, but then again, upgrading your WiFi kit to the N spec would also seem to do the trick. Neither of the two gave me anywhere near 1000 feet of coverage by the way, so we’re still in bogus fantasy land as far as this goes.
