What is the difference between a wireless range extender and an antenna?

Which one should I get to better receive wifi networks at home without DSL or cable?

Antenna will increase the sensitivity of your wireless card. Thus, increasing the distance you can be from the access point. The access point's range is still limited to the 802.11 specified 200 feet with line of sight. Use an antenna if your signal is just a little weak because there are a couple walls in the way.

A range extender will recieve the signal sent from your access point and re-broadcast. This may have security implications as the range may reach into places you dont want your wi-fi network reaching.

Also, you can not share a dial up connection. You must be using some type of broadband (DSL or Cable modem subscriptions).

How do you use two wireless routers to expand the range of your wireless network?

I have researched this quite a bit but the answers are somewhat elusive. No matter where I put the wireless router in our house, no matter which brand I buy, no matter how large the antennas are on the router, there are some places in the house that get very sporadic or low connections wirelessly. I have several mainstream wireless routers. Has anyone successfully enabled a connection between two routers to improve wireless reception? I also tried a range extender, and it worked, except that I ended up getting constant IP conflicts, plus the thing consistently lost its connection to the internet every night.

Some offer Routers that are WDS compliant, you can use them to extend your Network using one as the Main and set up to Distribute IP's while the other is set up as a remote and must be set to Not distribute IP's
There are only a select few on the market that support WDS and you will need to check.
I know for a fact that Apple's Airport Extreme Base and there Airport Express have the WDS function.
here is a link explaining how it works.

Creating an External Wireless Network from your home based Internet Connection?

I have a 20mbps/1mbps connection at home and I have a dlink gaming router to provide wirelss around my house. I want to be able to extend that wireless outside. I have found many high gain antennas but I am not sure how to do this. I understand setting up one high gain antenna.. I can do that right outside my balcony (I live in an apartment building). The baclony has a clear line of site for hundreds of feet (there are many tall buildings nearby). Is it possible to make one antenna connected to my network here, then lets say 400 feet away, another antenna which is powered at another location, and it can act as a repeater or range extender? In that fashion, strategically place 3-10 of similar powered antennas in the area to bounce the signal or to blanket and area. Almost like cell towers? My goal is to be able to get wireless internet/connect to my network @ home within a large area while not being home. Thanks

Well you can certainly use another access point in bridge mode, or just pick up a wireless bridge. as far as cascading them, i suspect there is a limit since they would all be on the same IP network. I would think you'd start to see some funky timeouts or delayed collisions. You would also be contending for the that same part of the spectrum with all the wirelss access points other people have along the way. The more of these you contend with, the greater the likelyhood you lose the connection.

Are there big antennas that can extend the reach of my wireless network?

It should be capable of transmitting across a neighborhood block. I've looked at range extenders, but they can only do a few hundred feet. How do cities implement WiFi, can I buy those antennas?

Ya, there are Big antennas, but i don't hvae info on them. you can search them up in the internet.

What do I need to broadcast an outdoor WiFi network?

House 1 (H1) has ADSL. Would like to broadcast a wireless signal over about 500-800 feet to reach another house (H2). Do I need one wireless router at H1 with a range extender antenna, and a repeater (router setup as repeater)in H2 with another range extender antenna? There are no obstacles between both houses, flat land. Would this setup work?

In short, yes, it will work. Just remember, the downside of wireless repeaters is that they reduce throughput on the WLAN. A repeater must receive and retransmit each frame on the same RF channel, which effectively doubles the number of frames that are sent. This problem compounds when using multiple repeaters because each repeater will duplicate the number of frames sent. Thus, be sure to plan the use of repeaters sparingly.

The configuration of a repeater is relatively straight forward. After switching the access point to repeater mode, you set the service set identifier (SSID) of the repeater to match the SSID of the specific (root) access points that the repeater will associate with. Most repeaters will, similar to wireless network cards, automatically associate with the access point with the strongest signal. However, you can designate specific MAC addresses of the preferred and secondary access points as an option. If the repeater cannot connect with the preferred access point, it will try to associate with the next one, and so on.

All in all, wireless repeaters are an excellent way to increase the radio range of an existing WLAN, especially if it's not practical to install an additional access point to fully cover the location. Just don't get carried away with installing too many repeaters to keep performance up.
