I have this Belkin wireless G router which i am currently sharing with my friends 2 blocks away. The signal he received is only a bar. I read bout custom making a wireless antenna to boost the signal but do not have any idea how. Can you guys teach me how? For your info, the router had been placed near to the window and its in the visible line to his house. Thanks!!!
Personally, instead of making a home made antenna, I would buy a cantenna, it is designed for this type of connection. It works for great distances, and signals to a small radius of area, instead of just sending the signal everywhere, but not very far.
It's basically a long antenna, in the shape of a can, and works very well. You can put one on the sending end, and one on the receiving end, and easily get a perfect connection!

What brand, the setup information is usually available on the mfgs website. If you tell us the brand of router we can probably point you to the exact information you need to setup wireless on it.

Is it the dbi? The GHz?
It is not in the frequency, which is in GHz; in fact higher frequencies do not translate into greater range - they translate into shorter wavelength which makes for better straight line but worse "around the corners" type of transmission.
The dBi range is a measure of received power - and this is a better measurement. Remember dBi is a common logarithm measurement, not a linear one. Understand how to read it before you use it. A difference of about 3 units is about twice the power level for example.
Maximum Input Power 50 W
Frequency: 2400-2483 MHz. 5 X Range Extender - Extends up to 5 times the original range of your WiFi access in open space.

This antenna is only compatible with modems and routers with a 1/4 inch external antenna port.
My dormitory is on the highest peak of my university's campus. That means it's farthest from the receiver. I need to improve the signal strength I get, which is very low. 'One bar' as a matter of fact. The building does have an elevator in it, which I hear can diminish a signal (however, I'm in the exact same building on the same floor as last semester and further away from the elevator and it has actually worsened.) What do you recommend I buy to improve my signal?
Thank you.

You'll need to have a line of sight between your dorm room and the campus receiver/transmitter. It would be best if you can get the antenna outdoors.
But if your college is deploying wi-fi. I'm surprised that THEY haven't implemented a narrow band antenna. You should check with your campus IT department.
I'm trying to add a wireless router to my 4 story town house. The DSL modem is in the basement in a telecommunications closet so unfortunately that's where the Router will go.
Does anyone know what kind of antenna I should look for when purchasing the router? What gain would be enough? I need the wireless to be working on the 4th floor. Or if you can recommend a Wireless Router, that would be great. Thanks.
P.S. Money is no object.
Check into a Linksys wireless repeater, which could be placed possibly on the second floor, boosting the signal. Of course it would have to be used in conjunction with a wireless router placed in basement. Total cost about $125 . I use a repeater in my ranch style house since my router is on one end of the house and my laptop on the other.

Advice on singular router / access barbule - SmallNetBuilder Forums
This puts me in a setting where I’m looking concerning a brand-new wireless router / access period, I don’t actually exigency a router as I by a hair’s breadth disable the DHCP and pour down the drain it concerning wireless at most in our basement, feeding it with grasp and router services from our D-Link DVG-5802S located upstairs from crack to bottom CAT6a cabling. From firmware 1.2x and up D-Link has by a hair’s breadth added more and more not needed features and reach more and more unsettled and the exhibit has modestly dive down the men’s room! With the latest 1.32NA my DIR-655 A3 has to be rebooted at least twice a epoch, or my wireless exhibit goes down the liquefied refreshment up! It’s from head to toe dreary looking at D-Link with the most substantial router devices to this declining actually clutter the entirety up with horrid firmwares! With no quote to on the skids?! I would modestly make good on my DIR-655 with a brand-new people if I could, but frankly it’s not conceivable to toe-hold any brand-new DIR-655 with firmware 1.11, all you can opinion here in Norway these days is the A4 with 1.22 or higher, which makes the DIR-655 a no probe concerning me after experiencing these horrid 1.2x –> firmwares concerning too extensive.
