I have this Belkin wireless G router which i am currently sharing with my friends 2 blocks away. The signal he received is only a bar. I read bout custom making a wireless antenna to boost the signal but do not have any idea how. Can you guys teach me how? For your info, the router had been placed near to the window and its in the visible line to his house. Thanks!!!
Personally, instead of making a home made antenna, I would buy a cantenna, it is designed for this type of connection. It works for great distances, and signals to a small radius of area, instead of just sending the signal everywhere, but not very far.
It's basically a long antenna, in the shape of a can, and works very well. You can put one on the sending end, and one on the receiving end, and easily get a perfect connection!

its the kind of router where you can pick up other wireless signals but i have the antenna turned off and i forgot how to go about it. can anyone help me?
What brand, the setup information is usually available on the mfgs website. If you tell us the brand of router we can probably point you to the exact information you need to setup wireless on it.

This antenna will only work with WiFi cards that have an external RP-SMA antenna connector.
It will not work with desktop PCs that have a USB WiFi device, laptops that have built-in integrated WiFi
Are the ones with 3 antennas faster?
I think wireless-N is capable of 4 antennas. But I haven't seen any for sale anywhere. Have you?
If more antennas = more speed. Will the future of wireless networking see routers for sale equipped with several dozen antennas transceiving at different frequencies?
More antennae=more simultaneous transfers. That does not necessarily equate to more speed.
I think we'll see a move in the silicon chips before we see an increase of antennae. There comes a point when offering more simultaneous transfers offers a diminished return in results.
I also predict we will see more efficient antennae, of the type that the commercial products use.

My dormitory is on the highest peak of my university's campus. That means it's farthest from the receiver. I need to improve the signal strength I get, which is very low. 'One bar' as a matter of fact. The building does have an elevator in it, which I hear can diminish a signal (however, I'm in the exact same building on the same floor as last semester and further away from the elevator and it has actually worsened.) What do you recommend I buy to improve my signal?
Thank you.

You'll need to have a line of sight between your dorm room and the campus receiver/transmitter. It would be best if you can get the antenna outdoors.
But if your college is deploying wi-fi. I'm surprised that THEY haven't implemented a narrow band antenna. You should check with your campus IT department.
I'm trying to add a wireless router to my 4 story town house. The DSL modem is in the basement in a telecommunications closet so unfortunately that's where the Router will go.
Does anyone know what kind of antenna I should look for when purchasing the router? What gain would be enough? I need the wireless to be working on the 4th floor. Or if you can recommend a Wireless Router, that would be great. Thanks.
P.S. Money is no object.
Check into a Linksys wireless repeater, which could be placed possibly on the second floor, boosting the signal. Of course it would have to be used in conjunction with a wireless router placed in basement. Total cost about $125 . I use a repeater in my ranch style house since my router is on one end of the house and my laptop on the other.
