Yaesu FT-225RD VHF Transceiver

I have just gotten my ham license and im looking for a Good but AFFORDABLE 2 meter handheld radio.

I love the Icom IC-v82. My first radio was the IC-v8. Both are affordable and low cost. The V82 has higher power and more features. I own them both... you can't go wrong with either. Both have excellent reviews.

Looking for model number MINATURE 2 Meter Amatuer Radio (Ham Radio)?

I am looking to buy a new 2 meter amateur radio for my small car. I can't seem to find anything in the HRO catalog that does the trick. Does anyone with interest in the amateur radio hobby know of the model number of a miniature or small footprint radio? Please let me know.

The HRO catalog isn't easy to navigate !

You would have more choice by looking at dual band (2m and 70cm) rigs. Prices are very reasonable these days.

Look under the Multi Band FM Mobile section.

The Icom IC208 has a detachable face plate and is $275. It looks really neat and has 50 watts available on both bands. Hide the rig out of sight, the face plate is tiny and should fit just about any car.

The Kenwood TM-G707a has been around for a while so it is well proven.

My mobile rig is the Kenwood TM-D700.
Not the smallest, but the detachable faceplate is small enough.
But check out the spec !
It's a dual band FM rig.
Plug in a GPS and it will broadcast your position via the APRS network.
It works full duplex - i.e. you can work mobile through satellites !

I find 2m/70cms FM a little dull at times but there is so much you can do with the TM-D700 - it's going to be a classic ! BTW - my car is tiny and it fits in just fine !

Good luck es 73 !

I have the Arrow J-pole. Inexpensive, easy to assemble. It isn't the best antenna, but it is the best antenna for the price.

Aaron has constructed a 2m receiver and we finished aligning it. Ollie duct-taped a dual band whip base station antenna to make it vertical and we connected it to a vhf/uhf duplexer. The UHF side was connected to a 448.500 MHz transmitter at about 1.5 Watts. The receiver was connected to the VHF side at 147.740. The units were linked with a small PIC microcontroller that Ollie helped me build during the long winter. This provides Morse code ID, tail, and tailbeep, as well as timeout functions. This is all the features you need for a ham repeater which allows you to be rebroadcast from a good vantage point. After a cranky solder joint on the transmitting crystal was identified, I did a...
