Motorola GP328 Plus 2 way radio battery and charger.?

Recently I put my Motorola 2 way radio into its charger. 5 minute later I noticed a burning smell from the charger. Upon investigation, found that the battery skin has melted and fused to the charger. My radio were damaged beyond repair. Please share if anyone of you have experienced the same occurence. Like to know what is the likely cause. Thank you.

Hi,
It appears to me that maybe one of the cells within the battery casing has failed, ruptured, exploded and or all of the above. This can happen with aftermarket batteries that use cheaper cells than what the proprietary Motorola batteries have. To my knowledge Motorola have not issued a recall on these type of batteries in recent years. If YOU do have a genuine Motorola battery that is less than 12 months old and it has always been charged with the genuine Motorola charger, you may have some recourse with Motorola Warranty and maybe even if your unit is completely dead now, they may even be kind enough to repair/replace your unit. You can virtually rule out the transformer as the culprit. If you experienced a power surge more than likely the transformer would have failed before frying the battery (but don't totally rule this out as the possibility?). Also there is a very slim possibility that some conductive material like metal fragments, liquid, conductive dust/lint particles may have crossed the Active contacts within the charger and caused a power spike post transformer, but this is highly unlikely. If you wish to discuss further resolving this issue, please contact me at simon@eventek.com.au

I will help were I can.

Cheers,

Simon

Does a battery radio dissipate energy when the power is on but the volume is turned off?

A normal FM radio with 2 AA batteries.

In addition, what's the power of it typically?

Yes if it's on then the batteries will lose power. All the components take power and are a drain on the battery whenever it's on, even though the volume is off.

2 way radio, there has GOT to be one that goes extremely far and supports rechargeable as well as AA batteries?

I need someone to tell me of 2 way radio, that has a lot of good channels, and supports rechargeable or AA batteries. it's important to use AA or AAA whatever batteries, something I can stock up on incase I can not charge the radio via AC power. What is out there? 30+ Mile range preferred, further the better. Please help!!

You need a Ham license to do that. The rough rule of thumb for 2 way radio communications when it comes to range is a watt a mile. That means you would need a transmitter with a power out of at least 30 watts and a good antenna. A typical Ham band transceiver with about a 50 watt power output would do the job, but you sure couldn't run it off of AA or AAA batteries. It could well be a portable or mobile unit running off of ~ 12 VDC at about 25 Amps. A typical CB band walky-talky only runs 5 watts into the final tank circuit (by law) and so under the best of conditions will only put out about 3.7 watts. So it's typical range is only about 3 1/2 miles under ideal conditions. Those cheap FRS radios that are sold in pairs only have about 800 MW output as, again, by law they only have a 1 watt input to the final tank circuit. The GMRS units do have a 5 watt input and about 3.7 watt out, but you also have to have a license to use them.

What gives a 2 way radio it's mile range?

I have some 2 way radio's and would like to get more mile range out of them if it's possible and I wanted to know what makes the mile range. is it the antenna? or the battery power or the wattage or what?

Furball has part of the equation. The antenna and RF power output are part of it, but so are the sensativity of the receiver AND the terrain.

The RF power output for public use license-free two-way radios is limited by the FCC. The antennae on those units is not directional, so they don't have any gain. The best that can happen is that the antenna is well tuned to the frequency band.

People forget about the other end of the system; the receiver. The most sensative (and again, the better tuned the antenna) the weaker the signal can be and still get picked up.

Finally, the terrain itself will come into play. If you read the fine print, most of those radios will have a disclaimer saying that the stated range is under optimal conditions. That's probably means absolutely flat terrain (no mountains or buildings) between the transmitter and receiver. Just like the miles-per-gallon on your care, your performance will vary.

I have a cobra LI 6000 2 way radio, it will not turn on. What could be the problem?

I have charged the battery and switched it with the other radio and it still does the same thing. Does anyone else have this model radio, what is the problem? How was it fixed?

Thanks

Cody
When I have trouble with a product i go to the manufacturer's support website or help line and ask the question.

Problem could be a fuse or broken battery leads or circuit board. Are the contacts on the battery terminal clean?
