So how will a airband radio pick up the jet flying outside my window?
and is the range good|?
A good one is anything between £40 and £140....it will pick up the aircraft outside your window....but usually only what the pilot is saying.....I used to be able to pick up an airport from about 30 miles away, but usually the signal is line of sight, so the signal from the air traffic control is better from the top of a mountain than in a valley.....but the lower price band would still get you a good receiver.
my dad getting mad at his airband radio
Does anyone else have a scanner/airband radio?
Thanks
Also could someone give me a link to a good uk radio site?

It should work fine. The air band it has listed is the standard for aircraft. You should be able to find out which channels Heathrow uses, they won't use all of them, and scan only those frequencies.
Also, the airlines will have their own frequencies that the pilots use to talk to their people at the gates, etc., to let them know exactly when to expect them. You may be interested in these channels as well.
The only thing that puzzles me about this scanner is what they list as: UHF - 88-108MHz. This is in the VHF section of the spectrum, not UHF. In the US, it's the area where all the commercial FM broadcast stations are located. But that doesn't affect the air channels.

PLL Synthesized Digital Radio with FM (87.5-108.0 MHz) Aviation Band (118-138 MHz)
Palm-size portable radio powered by 2 AA batteries (Not included)
1-99 minutes sleep timer
6 tuning methods with 100 memories
Accessories - owner's manual earbuds.
It's not hard...just search Google or something for frequencies in your area and tune them in on the scanner. A complete idiot could do it without trouble.
These airband radios dont connect to the police to they? because ive read that that is illegal?
Im only intrested in listening to atc and jets above me?
Thanks
It is illegal to listen into Police Broadcasts in UK, but most of them are now encrypted anyway.....if you go on-line there are loads to choose from, but you want a good multi channel one.

IntroductionListening to airplanes is and has always been a fascinating hobby. To do so, you need a good receiver. I decided to design and build a high performance and dedicated VHF-AM receiver. ( we are talking 1994 )
When I was working as a professional engineer at one of the biggest telecom companies in the world, I had the opportunity to design an build several synthesised receivers covering 118 to 136 MHz with an AM de-modulation method. Using the possibility to measure the design with high standard equipment and playing with several VCO and PLL circuitry, I ended up in with this design of a high performance AM receiver with an excellent dynamic range needed for ‘near by’ operations (listening at the field) and outstanding sensitivity to receive far away ground stations. (when listening at home)
