How many amps do i need to push a CB car radio that runs at 13.8v. I have searched the internet for this and i cant find it for anything.
a 3amp fuse comes with cb radios that have fuses already installed, even if you have your radio tuned to push 20w its not 20w of power, like your thinking. So the 3amp fuse still works, its what i use on my galaxy dx959 which pushes almost 30watts sideband

VERY BIG AMPLIFIER IN CAR
I've heard of Cb linear amps that boost power but I really know nothing of how they operate. Are they just plug and go or are they complicated to use? I'm thinking of buying an old tube type amp but I might just be wasting my money...Anybody??
Totally illegal.
If you have no knowledge of radio frequency emissions, honestly... for your safety it is best to leave that subject alone. CB amplifiers are illegal for a reason. CBers require no training. If you do not know what you are doing, stay away.

I have a midland mini weather max cb, and i have a 250 amp. i was just wandering how to hook it up with a magnetic antenna., and i don't think it's in tune with it.
As the first answer notes, it is illegal. As to tune and peak, I've repaired two radios that had been "tuned and peaked". The result in both cases was a return to proper operation *and* a considerable *increase* in power output.
Some (certainly not all) so-called "techs" are irresponsible and simply wish to line their pockets.
You have to ask yourself what you intend to use the radio for. If it is local communications, you shouldn't have any problems for 5 miles or so. Figure up to 20 miles if the location is in the country and you don't have a lot of other local cbers.
Sporadic E propogation can cause headaches for legitimate users of CB as this will bring in distant stations even when normal F layer propogation does not exist. By this, I mean the band will be "open" for long-distance when it really should be "closed". In this case, folks running amps will cause interference for others far outside their local area (this may include you).
There are other options, depending upon what you wish to do. There is GMRS, which is a UHF allocation with no test, but, I believe, a $75.00 fee for the license. It allows mobile to mobile communications as well as base to mobile, but forbids base to base communications. However, it is very reliable and is largely interference-free. Depending upon antenna height, expect several miles between mobiles over flat terrain and 15 miles or so base to mobile (depending upon antenna height). If you are so lucky as to be located on a high hill ..... that might be extended to 30 miles or more.
The other option, if you are simply looking for a hobby and wish to talk to distant stations, is to look into obtaining an amateur radio license. Morse code was eliminated for all classes of license some time back. If you might be interested in this, I've included a link to a Yahoo group with over 3000 members whose purpose is to assist folks in obtaining their first license or upgrading their existing license. There are many links as well as give-aways for members (free books are often given away and there were some on-line teaching/practice exams from a commercial site - that normall costs money - that were given away).
My background includes former 1st class radiotelephone operators license with radar (currently GROL as they dropped the many former classes of phone license), former 2nd class radiotelegraph license, and current amateur extra class license. All first obtained in 1966. My novice ticket was in 1962. Also used cb back in the early '70s :)
Best regards,
Jim

I bought a cb amp it says la 900 on the front. it has three power mods and a ssb side to it. is this a good mobile cb amp? i payed 300 dollers for it. it looks like new.
sounds pretty good.... it probably does about 700watts, i dont know who makes it. and its got a delay for SSB Talking. thats pretty awesome.... anything called pre amp? or rx amp?
look up hooking up amps, its not as easy as one may think...
you may need to upgrade an alternator depending on the vehicle, and ground, other wise you may get shocked through your mic.
yes, use a voltmeter to make sure that the "chargers" output voltage is higher than the batterys voltage before connecting them. Will be fine! 6 to 8 AMPS are not a "trickle" charge, thats more olike 1-2 amps, which out 12v machines show at work.
it will "throttle down" as fred says because as the batterys chargine voltage gets higher internal resistance from the battery will counter the charger .
I have real world experiece with this everyday at work. the 12v Machines at work all use 10 amp chargers, that show 6-8 amps when charging. No amount of college degrees will replace my 25 years of real world experience on this subject.
BRING IT ON FLUFFERS!!!!!!

I deal with batteries and chargers everyday!!
Hey Sparky, You do not realize that this is a car battery, not little Ni-cads, read the question. it`s a CAR battery. CAR battery chargers charge at any where from 2amps for trickle charging, to 10 for regular charging and can handle 20 aqmps for a quick charge. if the battery is completly flat, it will take a half hour or so before there starts to be any current flow, then the current rises, and then nearing the end of the charge it will taper off as battery voltage increases countering the output of the charger.
Bumbling? I guess I get Paid well to Bumble!! Go back to your car toys, wait is that you I heard cruising by my house with a Honda playing Vanilla Ice?

Can Hams Use CB Radios? | Walkie Talkie Two-Way Radios .com
A licensed amateur operator can modify equipment originally intended for use on other bands – for example war surplus military gear – for use on the ham bands, however CB channels are not part of the ham bands. All equipment operated on the CB channels must be government approved, and the FCC has never approved any external amplification device – "linear amplifier" for use in this band. A ham that tries this will not only get the equipment confiscated, but will lose his amateur radio privilage as well.
