Want to know if it is possible to talk to nevada with a cb radio with a powerful amplifier. Can mountains or valleys scramble signals of any sort of communication, even a celluar?
depending on where you are from you can talk to nevada if yu have a dirrectional radio antenna if they still make moon raker 6 is very good what you can do is bounce your signal off the ionosphere and back down line of sight is usually limited to several miles get acb with double sideband aor go amateur and talk to the world have fun Gorbalizer

Where can I buy a linear amplifier for a Mobil CB Radio. The radio is a Cobra 25 wx
Not legal:
TITLE 47--TELECOMMUNICATION
CHAPTER I--FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CONTINUED)
PART 95_PERSONAL RADIO SERVICES--Table of Contents
Subpart D_Citizens Band (CB) Radio Service
Sec. 95.411 (CB Rule 11) May I use power amplifiers?
(a) You may not attach the following items (power amplifiers) to
your certificated CB transmitter in any way:
(1) External radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (sometimes called
linears or linear amplifiers); or
(2) Any other devices which, when used with a radio transmitter as a
signal source, are capable of amplifying the signal.
(b) There are no exceptions to this rule and use of a power
amplifier voids your authority to operate the station.
(c) The FCC will presume you have used a linear or other external RF
power amplifier if--
(1) It is in your possession or on your premises; and
(2) There is other evidence that you have operated your CB station
with more power than allowed by CB Rule 10, Sec. 95.410.
(d) Paragraph (c) of this section does not apply if you hold a
license in another radio service which allows you to operate an external
RF power amplifier.

Ive acquired a Firebird F-500 vintage amplifier for amateur radio/ cb. I cannot find any info on this thing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
What you have is a 11 meter CB amplifier.
This is a base unit 110volt ac, with (3) 6JE6C tubes being driven by (1) 6JE6C driver tube. This amplifier has an input of 2-4 watts drive from a typical CB radio. Output on AM is about 180 watts and on SSB about 300 to 400 watts. This is illegal for use on the CB band but can be used on the amateur 10 meter band, thou its signal wave form is really not that pure.
Hope this helps.
Price: $284.99
Output: 13.8V DC
18 AMP Constant/20 AMP Surge
Input: 115V AC, 60Hz, 450 Watts
Powers Cellular Phones,12V DC CB Radios, Scanners, HAM Radios, Autosound Systems, etc.
Perfect for Home, Shop and Hobbyist
Ive acquired a Firebird F-500 amplifier for amateur ham radio/cb. I cannot find any information on this amp. Any info. you may know will be helpful. Maybe a link to a site that explains it? Thanks
you are not going to find info.
the amp is illegal in the USA. it was made for use on CB, and has little or no filtering.
Before you can use it on ham radio, you must filter the output of you can get a fine from the FCC.
I have a new side band radio and tuned a set of firestik duals but dont really know how to use it besides talking to truckers on the road. What are the advantages of upper and lower side band, and how much trouble would one be in for adding a linear amplifier to their radio? What are the benifits of that? And last but not least how do I get the engine noise to go away from the radio?
Sideband is a Mode (or type) of transmission , just as AM is also another Mode.
CB's that have sideband modes will be switchable from LSB (lower sideband) and USB (upper sideband).
These modes offer greater range than normal AM.
Sideband CB's will put out 12 watts on sideband whereas AM transmissions are only 4 or 5 watts output.
Due to atmospheric conditions in the ionosphere long distances (500miles +) are possible on the CB band.
While possible on AM , the Mode is more prone to noise and fading effects , combine that with low output power makes it a poor choice for trying for long distance 'DX' contacts.
Sideband Mode is much more suitable for DX as it is less prone to distortions of the signal when it is refracted back to earth by the ionosphere. , and the extra power does help.
With the standard power of 12 watts feeding a 5/8 wave vertical I was able to make contacts easily of over 2500miles and I also made some contacts of over 5000 miles.
This is of course using the ionosphere to return the transmitted signals back to earth.
This condition is called 'Skip' , even though this is a misapplied term.
Typically without Skip , the standard transmission range of sideband Cb's with 12 watts is about 20 to 30 miles with a good antenna system.
Using an external amplifier , often called a 'Linear Amp' is illegal and is a Federal offense.
Using one and getting caught with it will incur a heavy fine and a police record that never goes away.
Performance wise, it is better to go with standard power and good antenna rather than use a poor antenna and a Linear Amp.
Electrical interference getting into the radio can be cured by installing noise suppressors on the alternator.
Older vehicles with separate regulators etc may need one there as well. , as well as distributers that use contact points.
This will cure most of your noise.
Don't forget to firmly mount the radio to the car body making sure it has a good electrical connection as well.
Run your + battery supply directly between the battery and the radio , making sure that the cable it doesn't pass nearby devices in the engine compartment (or the cabin) that makes noise (eg , alternator , electric fans , computers etc)
Make sure your antenna also is properly grounded to the vehicle body with a good solid mechanical and electrical connection.

JUST GETTING BACK INTO HAVING A HOMEBASE UNIT. I HAVE A COBRA 29 LTD THAT I USE. I HAVE PURCHASED A MODIFIED B&W HF1000 AND DONT REALLY KNOW A LOT ABOUT IT JUST THAT IT IS HEAVY BECAUSE OF THE TRANSFORMER. IT USES 2/813 TUBES. I HAVE SCAN THE INTERNET TO SEE IF I CAN FIND IT AND WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT IT AND CAN'T GET ANYTHING BUT PARTS FROM B&W. IF SOMEONE COULD LET ME KNOW WHAT I AM adding ground radials and a proper installation goes a long way with it . its problem IMO is by itself it uses coax and/or mast as ground elements . i wouldnt buy a new one considering a maco 5/8 is about the same price , if you already got it or can get a used one very cheap it seems it can be a prety good...
