CB Radios Answers
i have an old cobra cb radio and i would like to get it up and running again but i am lacking a power supply and above that i think the mic is in need of some rewireing and repair can anyone provide me some info on anyone who would know anything about this cb radio?
If you would like to repair this one yourself, I'm providing a link to CBC International they have all the schematics and how to do books on cobra's etc. With the mic, the cord at the connector usually breaks from flexing, truckers have this problem all the time with the mic hanging from the mirror. Gearbox got it right about the truck-stops having CB repair shops on site.
As for the power supply for base use, go to eBay under Power Supplies you will find some good deals.

I have a 1979 Sears Roadtalker, SSB, Base/Mobile CB radio. The radio is in exceptional condition and is installed in a Marmon Tractor of approximately the same year. I do not want to change the radio to a newer more powerful model for sentimental reasons. I am trying to find someone to work on it. Maybe an old radio tech with parts available. I want it to sound better and obviously be more powerful and I am willing to pay a fair price. I have been to at least 20 radio shops and they only want to work on new products. Any ideas??
Just an update, Yes CBs are very much still n use. Not only by hobbyists but, if you are in the trucking industry like I am, they are very much a part of our livelihood. The radio has been peaked and tuned at a shop recently, the SWRs are great and there is a high quality antenna system. The radio performs fine, I was hoping to find someone with parts to make it better.. echo/reverb board, stronger finals etc.. Thanks so much for your time and amswers so far.
Again I appreciate the answers and everyones time. I am not a "CB Rookie" just looking for a better sounding radio. If you will read my question you will see I did not ask for a power increase over the legal limit but instead for mods to increase its current level and make it sound better. I do have a ham liscence and this is a SSB radio.
Any modifications to CB radio that teke their power output over the 4 watt and 100% modulation limits are forbidden by FCC regulation.
Here is the applicable regulation:
Any modifications that make the radio do anything over and beyond what it was designed to do are also forbidden by regulation.
Sec. 95.425 (CB Rule 25) May I make any changes to my CB station transmitter?
(a) You must not make or have any one else make any internal modification to your CB transmitter.
(b) Internal modification does not include:
(1) Repair or servicing of a CB station transmitter (see CB Rule 24,
Sec. 95.424); or
(2) Changing plug-in modules which were certificated as part of your CB transmitter.
(c) You must not operate a CB transmitter which has been modified by anyone in any way, including modification to operate on unauthorized frequencies or with illegal power. (See CB Rules 9 and 11, Sec. Sec. 95.409 and 95.411.)

As an amateur operator you must be especially careful. You could be subject to the loss of your license. An amateur license does not give you special priveleges on CB. They are 2 different services, each with their own regulations.
Why not just stick to the ham bands? They are certainly much more fun and you can do all the enhancements you want legally.
I'm not being critical.... just trying to help.

i just bought this cb radio, i am about to start a part time job escorting oversize loads and needed (and wanted) a cb radio
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00024D IDK/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
how hard will this be to install in my pickup truck? is it a decent cb? if i cant install it where can i take it to get installed?
G'day, you shouldn't have any problems installing the rig in your pickup and Midland's are known for their reliability in the CB world, the sites I have given you will give you any more info you might be needing and be able to answer any further questions that may crop up. Good luck with your new job and the same goes with your CBing. 73's and Cheers mate!
You can also try your local truck stops, they usually have a CB repair shop on site. Truckers have a liking for these cobra radios, but the reason I believe the speaker is missing in the first place is it was over driven and froze up. I would just use an external speaker like a Motorola mobile speaker ( you can find these on eBay), plug it in the jack in back of the radio that says Ext. Speaker. This jack is usually a 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) mini plug, found at Radio Shack stores. A lot of the truckers do this by putting the speaker behind their head so they can hear over the stack noise.
