I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu. I have a CB radio with a 20 inch cable running through my trunk under my tail light to under my car. i had a piece of metal screwed into my back bumber frame on the right side. when i hook up my SWR tuner it reads 10.0 on all 40 channels i have no range with the 102 inch whip antenna and idk what to do.
this sounds like a grounding issue, check to make sure antenna and radio are properly grounded.
www.eham.com and other sites have great articles about setting up a good mobile install, grounding, etc
102 inch whip, once you get it squared away should be a killer antenna.
This is just for fun, i am going to put the duels antennas back on in a little bit, i will switch them out periodically
I want to install it where the trailer ball hitch goes on the center bumper, but was also thinking on the left side of the bumper or like the state police have them on the left rear quarter panel. I just want a place where I will get the lowest SWR or a good plane. Also do I need extra hardware like plastic gourmets to prevent it from grounding to the vehicle or do I want to ground the antenna to the vehicle. Thanks in advance :)
If you mount the antenna in the center of the rear bumper, then it will have to be removed to lower the tailgate. Most people will mount the antenna just to the right or left of the tailgate.
If your bumper is flat on top, you can drill a 1/2" hole and mount directly to the bumper using a stud mount such as this.

The mount will need a clean good ground on the bottom of the bumper and will come with a nylon insulator to go between the stud and the bumper on top.
If your bumper is rounded, you may be able to use a mount that clips onto the top edge such as this.

I would like to mount my 102 whip to a poll. I'll be using an L bracket and bolts. The bracket will be insulated from the poll. Can I just add some radials for the other half of my signal? I'll be attaching them using the four bolts for the mount. My antenna is a total of 108" with the spring at its base. Do my radial have to add up to 108"? If so I'd like to add four of them with a length of 27" each. I'm planning to use 1/2" copper pipe. I'm thinking I can just smash one ind of the pipe and drill a hole for the bolts. Can the radials be shorter or longer? This will be used for 11m CB band. I think I've read the radials should be at a 45* angle to the whip. So I'm thinking I should mount the radials in an X pattern under the whip. Please can someone tell me if this will work or not? Thanks!!!!!!

The poll I've got is a galvanized fence pipe. Can I still run a wire down to make a dipole? Can I attach the wire at the mounting bolt or do I have to solder it to the outside brade? I thought the mount was already connected to the bread through the coax connecter, right?
well, yeah, sorta..
CB 1/4wave is 108 inches. A 102 inch whip requires a 6 inch base spring.
Radials are 1/4wave each, you can use 3 or 4 as you need. Each radial is 1/4wave.
I would NOT use copper pipe, I would use EMT conduit for the cost.
You can also use copper wire.
The radials should angle down at 45 degrees.
The standard ground plane antenna with radials at 90 degrees will exhibit a 31 ohm load. By angling down, you pull the impedance closer to 50 ohms.

Yes, it means they are still in the 1950's...
I'm thinking about building a magnet-mount cb antenna. I have built antennas before for amateur radio, so I know a little bit. It's a magnetic-mount loaded whip antenna. I would like to know how to calculate how big to make the coil for the antenna. I want it base-loaded, if that matters.
~Thanks!
I took one apart the other day, base loaded, for 30 MHz
The coil was about 1.25 inch diameter
And 1 inch long with #16AWG enameled
Hope this properly answers your question
