Also i was reading somewhere on the web about phase 1 and phase 2 of digital but i couldnt understand what it meant. should i buy it now or wait to buy it later. will price of the scanners be more or will it go down on price on digital police scanners as time goes?

will a Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT work in my area or do i need a more expensive digital scanner?
It may work for the Couv. But Portland runs on 800 mhz on a revolving system. Scanner won't work for Portland police.

I am thinking about buying one but I'm kind of scared to because I have heard that they are really hard to program and I want to know if that is true. I used to have a scanner back in like 1999, before they went digital here and I never had any problem programming the older scanners. I know I can get software for programming it thru a computer, but I'd like to save some cash. Is it real hard to program them manually?
I do this for my department. You can buy a digital one, and the software that comes with it, program the frequencies you want on the computer, and download it to the scanner. Usually the software or scanner comes with a cord that plugs into the computer. You just have to know the frequencies that you want. Easy, easy, easy. Just don't tell them that at my work, I get paid extra to do this. Manually is pretty time consuming and unless you are very familiar with this, its a real pain in the butt.

When I looked to buy a scanner there are some that say digital and others that say trunking... can someone explain what it means to me even if there isn't a difference? I just want to make sure I don't waste my money and buy the wrong thing
they call a trunking scanner "digital", but it is still receiving conventional FM in a trunk group.
Digital is protected under the Communications Privacy Act. Digital is encrypted and it is against the law to decode encrypted communications.

you're looking at manufacturing and programing a bunch of chips and putting them all over tiny circuit boards...
just buy a digital one form the store, youll save a ton of money and time...
you cant just "convert" A to D....well they make ADA (analog - digital - analog) converters for audio hardware but you cant really use it in this project....
