scanner signals?
I have an older scanner and I can only receive weather signals
do I need a new digital scanner?
Bart - I have been a scanner listener for years and I have never heard of "broadband" when it comes to scanners. Are you sure you don't mean "digital"?
Your best bet is to go down to your local Radio Shack and ask them what type of scanner you need for your town or city.
You may not need an expensive digital scanner. It all depends on what type of radio system your police use.

Depends upon your location....
Many big cities and many states (like Louisiana) are moving all of their communications over to 700Mhz trunking systems as it allows for way more traffic on the system than what analog could have dreamed of.
Researching with radioreference.com on your location to see if your location is going APCO 25 compatible Digital trunking or if the area is staying traditional analog should be what influences your scanner purchase.

The FreqOfNature website has a page where they used to keep a current list of digital scanner prices. They haven't updated the prices since 2004 but the companies that sell them are listed there as well. They list 19 different companies that sell digital scanners. See the source link below for the FreqOfNature URL.
I live in the UK and I know it is virtually impossible to listen to the emergency services now they have gone digital but does the same apply to home phones? If they do not encrypt as severe as the police etc, can anyone recommend a scanner possible of picking up and decoding these signals.
Many thanks
Why do you want to know? lol
