As a 911 Center administrator, I can tell you that there is another way of making these calls "secret". There are codes that are pre-established in order to open up the channel in the first place called "PLU" tones. If you don't have the PLU tone, you don't hear the subsequent call. "Scanner Land" therefore, stays in the dark and the police, EMS, and fire can do their thing without the neighborhood knowing others' personal info. Nice, huh?

When I looked to buy a scanner there are some that say digital and others that say trunking... can someone explain what it means to me even if there isn't a difference? I just want to make sure I don't waste my money and buy the wrong thing

they call a trunking scanner "digital", but it is still receiving conventional FM in a trunk group.

Digital is protected under the Communications Privacy Act. Digital is encrypted and it is against the law to decode encrypted communications.

I just got myself a new Radio shack Pro96 Digital Scanner last week. I have the Frequency that I am currently listening to right now. I also have the ID#'s. But how do I put them into my Scanner? I know "Nothing" about Digital trunking. Thanks.

First there is Trunking, which is using standard FM modulation, and at least 3 frequencies. One frequency will be a control channel, and will not have any voice. It determines what channel is open, and who is using it. Trunking is shared by many users, who may or may not want to hear each other. Users are given an ID, which defines the talk group. Users within that talk group will only hear each other within the same talk group, even though there are multiple talk groups using the same frequencies. When you load in the frequencies, and start listening as trunked, you will hear ALL the talk groups, unless you filter to a specific talk group. To actually do this, look at the link below, and select the Motorola Trunking section.

Digital trunking is similar, where there are multiple users using the same frequencies, the difference is there is no actual modulation. All the audio is provided in a digital format (AKA P-25). You must set the scanner to decode the digital audio, by selecting the baud rate, and modulation scheme

It looks like you don't need either. None of the agencies around you are using either digital are trunking. They are either using straight FM or are using FM with CTCSS which just about any scanner made in the past 10 years can handle.

That being said, I would still recommend getting a trunking scanner if you are getting a handheld scanner as many of the large cities use trunking for their systems.

To my knowledge, I thought that really the only thing that became digital that scanners cannot pick up anymore are cell phones (which is also illegal). So what else is out there worthy of being picked up by the digital scanners?...or can the digital ones pick up cell phones??

And also, what are all the systems (such as cops) that you can pick up on that you have to get a trunking scanner for?

they are keeping up with the new technologies.
