Do emergency broadcast signals interrupt unused radio frequencies?
Radio Center – County of Monroe, NY #4

I have an FM transmitter that allows me to play my ipod through the radio in my car. It works best on 88.3 which has no normal station. I was wondering if an emergency broadcast like the ones that warn you about severe storms and stuff will interrupt it.

NO. These emergency broadcasts, Known properly as the Emergency Alert System, are transmitted from the real radio stations directly and on their own frequencies. Your system does not have any way for it to input the emergency information then send it out to your radio. Some (but very few) radios have an interupt feature that will switch to a National Weather Service All hazards alert from whatever they were playing, but those radios are few and expensive.

Unfortunately, many non-members of this organisation have not yet vacated the band segment and one such station is still active around 7,110 MHz. This is causing problems with the effective monitoring and use of 7,110 MHz as the centre of activity for emergency communications.
