Ham Radio Operators: What's the strangest contact you ever made on the ham radio frequencies?
Ham Radio

or most interesting.

Following the horrendous Alaskan earthquake in 1964 I stayed on the air for 48 hours handling emergency radio traffic out of Alaska.

I was a junior in high school at the time. My principal knew I was a ham, and he gave me two days off school to assist with the emergency effort.

In those days there were no cell phones, no internet, and very little way to communicate when all the power lines were down.

Most of the traffic I handled was names of survivors and injured/killed, which we passed on to the various news agenccies. We also handled requests for equipment, supplies, and personnel.

It was an unforgettable experience. I learned more in those two days than I would have learned in two months at school.

What is some good emergency frequencies to program into my VHF ham radio for a hiking around BC and the Yukon?

The Yukon Amateur Radio Association site has the repeater frequencies for the Yukon Territory on their website. The British Columbia Amateur Radio Co-ordination Council has the information for BC on their site.

how come my handheld ham radio wont pick up cb transmissions when i am on cb frequencies?

ps i dont transmit, and have a license for ham radio
yaesu vx-7r

The Yaesu vx-7r handheld has general converge RX and TX on ham bands 50 , 220 , 144 and 440MHz.

As the RX coverage is an extra feature , but not a main purpose of the rig RX performance on these other bands will be compromised.

Add to that the low sunspot numbers we are experiencing now (which kills DX contacts on the higher bands) and the drop in active CBers means that there is little to hear on the 27Mhz band in most places.

Are there any frequencies I can use on a ham radio that dont require a license?

You cannot transmit on any frequencies without a license. You can only listen.

Ham radio. Calling frequencies?

Do ham's operationg on HF really use the calling frequencies shown in the bandplans or they call CQ in random frequencies?

They call CQ on any frequency they want which is within their licensed privileges.

Purdue University News (08/10/09) Venere, Emil

Purdue University researchers are developing a new class of microelectromechanical (MEMS) devices called resonators that contain vibrating, hair-thin structures and could be used to filter electronic signals. Resonators vibrate in specific patterns, so they can cancel out signals that contain certain frequencies while allowing others to pass, making these devices useful for applications such as refining cell phone signals. The devices have led to a new type of band-pass filter, which is used in electronics to allow some signals to pass while blocking others, says Purdue professor Jeffrey Rhoads. This new class of resonators represents a potential way to further the miniaturization of band-pass filters while improving their performance and power efficiency. Incoming signals generate voltage that creates an electrostatic force, causing the MEMS filters to vibrate. In addition to their potential use as cell phone filters, resonators also could be used for advanced chemical and biological sensors for medical and homeland security applications, and possibly as a new type of mechanical memory element that uses vibration patterns to store data. “The potential computer-memory application is the most long term and challenging,” Rhoads says. He says the band-pass filter design promises to create better performance than previous MEMS technology because it more strictly defines which frequencies can pass and which are blocked.
