Im trying to become a ham radio operator and I keep hearing of a emergency responce kit just wonderig what was in it.
I can make a reasoned guess, but the best place to ask the question would be an amateur radio forum site. Google for it.
Emergency Amateur Radio Kit for field use, Using a Pelican case, Samlex switching power supply, Mobile Radio and Fuse panel from West marine to a ...
I would like to build a ham radio. I don't have an infinate supply of cash, so low cost would be nice. Time however should not matter that much. Is there any way to make one out of househjold materials? If so, some instructions would be appreciated. Otherwise, how much do most kits run for? Do you need a license to "legally" use one? What are the distance limits (ability or legally)? Do you need to know moarse code? Some help would be very much appreciated!
A license is required to operate an amateur radio. Mose code is required for the higher two license classes. The entry level Technician class morse code test is optional.
Honestly, constructing a radio out of random parts may be difficult. You may be able to construct a simple CW (morse code) transmitter/receiver on a minimal budget. Still, you'll have to buy more parts.

As a newbie to ham radio I have been reading recently about small qrp transceivers (Pixie-Micro 80- Tiny Tornado etc) but they seem outdated or obsolete. Is anyone still making these type of kits and which is the smallest and best one?
Ideally UK manufacturers but any country is fine.
I can put MFJ very high on my list of recommendations. Their equipment is reasonable, and reliable.
I'd also recommend the ARRL website, to which I will include a link. The books you can buy on all different aspects of Ham Radio will be very helpful to a "newbie", and to an OT (licensed since 1968) like me, who needs to brush up once in a while.
MFJ is good for prices, and a variety of different things, so I'll include a link to their website as well. I'm also going to pull up the Amateur Electronic Supply site for you. All of these companies can handle an overseas order if you need one.
It just dawned on me that you must be from the UK, so maybe the RGSB (I think that's what it's called) is more to your needs, but there's stuff on the ARRL site that may be of use anyway.
73 and good luck.

ham radio from a normal radio?
im a hacking nerd nerd 8B
i have a normal plug-in radio at home and a mini portable radio (cleverly disguised as an ipod by me;D) and i was wondering if its possible to make either one of those a ham radio, instead of having to buy a kit to make one.
As an ham operator, I would not even attempt to make an ham radio out of a standard broadcast receiver. You might find some usable parts, but it's better if you were to buy the ARRL's Radio Amateur Handbook or even get a read of QST magazine at the library. They may even have a Radio Handbook or books on making transmitters, receivers, transceivers and the like to check out.
If you are a licensed ham, you can check out ARRL's web site and several other ham radio sites online. Even your local ham club could get you started right as I'm sure they have construction articles.

My husband and two of his friends are going on a hiking trip and will be liven off the land. They will be out of contact of everyone with no cell reception "maybe HAM radio reception" for about one month deep in mountain country. We have a first aid kit but their are things they would like to add and where informed that they needed to complete a few forms to be able to get the items. I can not find what forms or any other answers on how to obtain the supplies they would like to take.
Supplies include
Penicillin
Novacaine
snake bit vaccine "rattle snake and copper head"
Pain killer of some short. Hydrocodone, Peracet ect.
They need these due to if anything thing happens and they can get a hold of a rangers station. By the time they got to them it would be to late.
Does anyone know how they can obtain these items?
Do not answer stock pile them or save your old prescriptions for that may work for a few items but not all of them plus that is the wrong way of doing it.
Check with REI. They are an outdoor sports supply store and have a large selection of first-aid kits from the simple to the expeditionary level. Others are Campmore and Sierra Trading Post. These two are discounters. They carry a large assortment, maybe even more than REI. You will need to get a prescription from your doctor for the antibiotics. Rather than penicillin (too many bacteria are resistant) I would suggest Keflex (for skin and superficial infections) It will cover many chest and respiratory infections, as well. Your doctor can prescribe topical Lidocaine for pain. Vicodin is also good for pain. I don't know if you can get snake bite antitoxins - but you can try. (They have to be kept refrigerated or they will deteriorate.) And finally, make sure that they have a good water purification system. And have them file a trip ticket with the Ranger Station with their planned itinerary. That way, if they are late, a search party can be dispatched.
