This is a slide show overview prepared by Scotty showing his work with converting PC Power supplies to ham radio use presented at the August 2007 ...
It's for a science experiment and would only need it for a short time. HAM radio power supplies with that amount of current go for $150+ and that's too much for a short time. There are some computer power supplies with a 12 vdc 34 amp rail that go for under $20, but I'm weary about anything dealing with computers as they usually don't last and are unreliable. I definitely need something with + & - terminals.
Power supplies from computers need to be hacked somewhat in order to be used for this kind of thing.
Most amateur radio operators start out with a battery. A 12 v car battery is good enough for temporary use, a deep discharge lawn mower or scooter battery should give the power level that you want for at least half an hour.
I am running a new circuit to my computer / ham radio area. For computers, I run a laptop, and two desktops. The ham radio is a Yeasu ft-450 running on an Amitron rs-35a power supply. The power supply has a 35 amp peak output and a 25 amp continuous output. However, the power supply is not putting out that much all the time, only when you transmit. I'm redoing the electrical in my house and currently on this circuit is all this stuff and part of my living room. I'm thinking of putting in a 20 amp circuit for just the computer and ham radio area and maybe splitting it into a couple of different outlets. Some additional info, I'm also upgrading the house to 200 amp service from 100.
JP - Nice radio.
I personally would have two 15 amp circuits for your shack - one for the radio equip and another for everything else. That may seem like overkill but an extra circuit is cheap compared to the money you've spent on everything else. You want that radio on a nice stiff circuit that is not burdened by anything else if possible. It is also nice to have the radio on a circuit that does not have the possible noise that is generated by computer equip.
I'm going to be spending a couple weeks in the southeast suburbs of Buffalo (near Orchard Park and East Aurora.) I plan to do some amateur radio operating, and there are some pieces I'd like to pick up there rather than lug; in particular a power supply ("12 volt" really 13.8, and about 25 amps.) What stores nearby should I look at (I can certainly drive all the way back to Buffalo, Amherst, etc. if that's needed.)

do i need any paperwork?
i currently do ham radio, but want a CB to chat with my friends when were driving.
cheers
Thanks for the help. what does metering the antennna mean? i have an old cb radio that my dad used, and a whip antenna from ebay. cheers
The ad for the antenna says it it pre-tuned. 34" long, open coil. thanks for the help.
I'd add a linear amplifier, around 7,000 watts. All the best cb'ers use 'em. Look for deals on eBay.
Oh, and an amplified microphone, too. It makes your signal go lots farther.
ARRLWeb: ARRL NEWS: Surfin#39;: Finding Woodstock
Forty summers ago, my high school classmates Joe Bergantino, WA1CYU, non-ham Ron Cibulskis and I decided to attend the Woodstock Music & Art Fair. Our plan was to drive to Bethel, New York (the site of the event), on Friday night, stay over in a hotel and go to the concert on Saturday and Sunday. We decided to pass on the first day of the show because the Friday line-up was heavy on the folk music side of the music spectrum and we were rockers, not folkies.
With tickets in hand (I still have mine because no one collected them), we completed the 120 mile trip without difficulty. Traffic was heavy at times, but there were no slow-downs or stoppages; we arrived in the Bethel area in about three hours.
