You can receive without a license but not transmit.

You need a license to transmit only.

what is cheapest antenna for ham radio? Does it work well?
Heathkit Catalog 1951 / All Wave Receiver AR-1

We are considering using ham radio, but would like to know what the expenses are and what would be the cheapest way to go. But on the other hand, hope for a setup that works sufficiently well. We only have receivers, so far - no transmitters.

The cheapest antenna is a simple longwire antenna. It is just what it's name implies. Simply a long wire cut to the wave length of the band you are working. It is fairly efficient but is also fairly directional. Best reception with it is from stations to the front or rear of the wire. Reception of stations out from the ends of the antenna are fairly poor. A better antenna is a dipole, which can be constructed from two wires of equal length separated by an insulator. A coaxial feed from the two wires connects to the receiver. The center conductor goes to the antenna inlet and the shield goes to the receiver ground. The two ends of the antenna equal the wave length of the band you want to use it on. This antenna has good gain but is highly directional. Reception off the ends of the antenna are almost nil.

Use a Oscilloscope for a Ham radio Frequency test?
Heathkit Catalog 1951 / page 2

I got my first HF radio yesterday. I just finished building my MFJ cub. To Aline the frequency you need a receiver. I have a oscilloscope at my school that I can use. Could I use that in some way to find the frequency that i'm transmitting at. The only receiver I have is the MFJ cub that I need to Aline. It's 17 meter. Thanks if anyone can help
Could I use a frequency counter to aline the radio?

A scope won't do it. But presumably, you're licensed for transmitting on 17 meters so you must be aware of other hams in your area--many will have an HF radio that will do the job for you. If don't know of anyone, go to the web site below, put your Zip code in the search window at the upper left, and you'll find every ham in that Zip code. Someone will definitely be willing to help you line up the Cub.

Followup: yes, a counter would be ideal.

what ham radio can easily send world wide messages?
Heathkit Catalog May 1958 / 2-6

I plan to use morse or voice. my goal is to contact a Receiver in tokyo japan, so it needs to be able to Travel at least 13,000 miles.

Your location, antenna system, and license class will be more important than the radio will be, here I was on 20 meters last week end and was talking into Russia, and as the day went on, just before I shut down the rig I herd call sign's from Hawaii very strong but was tired and went into the other room..
You will have to have a license first, and be for the bands you want to operate on, then a radio and antenna, get a keyer and get good at the code, it's easy after you get used to it..

Ham Radio, Ic-703, ic-718, ft-450, CW, HF?
Heathkit Catalog 1978 - 007

I am getting into cw, haven't been on the air yet in cw. I'm in college now, so money is low but who isn't. I like the running off dc to be a field set up. Which radio do you think would be good.

I don't like how the ic-703 is low power but the reviews are awesome and I like how small it is. The main reason why I like the 450 and 718 is because of the output. I hear the 718 is a really good receiver but the 450 is not. I don't know.

At this moment i'm really liking the 703, but the low power. So tell me what you think. Thanks.
Oh and you can add in any other rigs also. and another thing. I just started to read about the cw filters, so if you have and input please tell. thanks

Well, the 450 has the IF-DSP and 100 watts clear up through 6 meters, which is heating up. The review in December 2007 said it wasn't a mobile sized rig, so its not for that, but you can still run it on DC, its a DC rig, but it may be the wrong size for the car.

The IF-DSP is sort of a new thing, and I had been planning to get an IC 706Mark II B before I started reading about the great things, in reduction of noise, and in selectivity from the IF-DSP, then I spent a little more and bought an IC 746.

I had considered the 706 because it will go all the way to 70 cm, with multimode functions.

The 450 has full break in, and it also has a function to work on your fist off the air. The only reason I know that was because a young man had posted a question about CW and I replied, and mentioned that if he had further questions he could e-mail me, which he did, and mentioned the FT-450, so I looked up the review.

I'll extend the same invitation to you about the e-mail, I'd be delighted to help you with any questions. Who knows, I could be turning into an "e-Elmer".
