I work for search and rescue and they do not have a radio to supply for everyone. I was wondering if I could put there frequency into my handheld ham radio and use it to communicate with them.
even for "emergency" communications, it is illegal to use a device certified for use in Amateur Bands only on a frequency used for public safety. It has happened in the past and results in censure from the FCC to the person (amateur) that modifies the radio to do this. some amateur radio handhelds can be programmed to listen on public safety frequencies, but they are blocked at the factory from trasmit capability. It can be a real bummer to be a hero in an emergency only to given a stiff fine and criminal record.

I'm going to be spending a couple weeks in the southeast suburbs of Buffalo (near Orchard Park and East Aurora.) I plan to do some amateur radio operating, and there are some pieces I'd like to pick up there rather than lug; in particular a power supply ("12 volt" really 13.8, and about 25 amps.) What stores nearby should I look at (I can certainly drive all the way back to Buffalo, Amherst, etc. if that's needed.)

I would like to build a ham radio. I don't have an infinate supply of cash, so low cost would be nice. Time however should not matter that much. Is there any way to make one out of househjold materials? If so, some instructions would be appreciated. Otherwise, how much do most kits run for? Do you need a license to "legally" use one? What are the distance limits (ability or legally)? Do you need to know moarse code? Some help would be very much appreciated!
A license is required to operate an amateur radio. Mose code is required for the higher two license classes. The entry level Technician class morse code test is optional.
Honestly, constructing a radio out of random parts may be difficult. You may be able to construct a simple CW (morse code) transmitter/receiver on a minimal budget. Still, you'll have to buy more parts.
It's for a science experiment and would only need it for a short time. HAM radio power supplies with that amount of current go for $150+ and that's too much for a short time. There are some computer power supplies with a 12 vdc 34 amp rail that go for under $20, but I'm weary about anything dealing with computers as they usually don't last and are unreliable. I definitely need something with + & - terminals.
Power supplies from computers need to be hacked somewhat in order to be used for this kind of thing.
Most amateur radio operators start out with a battery. A 12 v car battery is good enough for temporary use, a deep discharge lawn mower or scooter battery should give the power level that you want for at least half an hour.

The power line ground is not always the equipment ground. Mixing the two can cause unexpected problems. (For instance, I wouldn't try grounding the soundcard in a computer to the computer's case, if I were you. It can certainly cause some very unexpected things to happen.) Power 'ground' isn't necessarily 'component' ground or necessarily case ground. How can you tell? Simplest way is to measure for voltage between any two 'grounds'. If there is any voltage present, they ain't necessarily compatible (both AC and DC voltages!).
