about 15 years ago i purchased a uniden pro340xl hand held cb radio. this was before the advent of nimh AA batteries. the radio was designed with a charging port so that it could charge AA nicad batteries in about 12 hours. my question is can use the radio to charge AA nimh batteries or will it cause problems ie blowing up or catching fire?

If it has a antennae outlet plug,then yes.you can buy a magnetic mounted antennas ready to go for about $35.00 bucks.You ll get a little more range,but not much,maybe about 2-3 miles out.You'll recieve abouy 5 miles,without the squelch tuned all the way up listeneing to the constant hiss.

I assume you have the antenna on the radio...
You may be too far from those on the radio to receive from a small antenna.
If you have a large, ground based radio...try to see what kind of signal you are getting from other people on the radio.
Most likely you are just too far away from them.

Depends on the antenna. Regular handheld radio could have a strong signal for long distances if used on a repeater system.
