Can I buy a CB antenna without a mount and plug it straight into a handheld?
GE Handheld CB

If i buy a handheld cb radio and don't want to mount an antenna on my roof, can I just buy one without a mount and plug it straight into the BNC connector?

It sounds like you want to connect a base antenna directly to your handheld CB. You can, but it won't operate very well unless you buy an antenna that doesn't require a ground plane. Most antennas require a ground plane, a large, flat piece of metal for it to sit in the middle of so the power match and transmit pattern are correct. Just putting a base antenna on your handheld will be awkward and won't operate very effectively.

Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner?

Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner, and if so, how far will it pick up?

In a word, no.

A CB radio operates in the 27mhz band. Most police are operating in the 150 or 450mhz bands, a few in 800mhz and a few in the 30-40mhz bands.

It would be impractical to modify the CB for these frequencies, it would basically require a total redesign but I suppose you could maybe get it to go into the low 30mhz range but I doubt there would be much there.

Then there is another Huge obstacle. The CB operates using AM modulation, the police will be using FM modulation. Even if you could tune in the right frequency, you wouldnt be able to hear them.

Trade the CB for a scanner.

Anyone know the quality of the Midland 75-822 Handheld CB Radio?

I'm thinking of getting one to keep in touch with my family on long shopping excursions and need a handheld, fairly cheap CB. Any help is appreciated.
I mean a HANDHELD CB radio. I have tried FRS radios and the range is very limited within busy stores and parking lots because of the obstruction. The short Rubber Duck antenna would work well would it not?

A CB radio is probably not the best choice for the use you have stated. For starters, the antenna on a CB is very long. You would have to extend it every time you wanted to use it, then push it back down so it wouldn't be a hazard.
Try the FRS radios. They are small, easy to use, and because of the frequency range have a nice compact antenna and are cheap.

How to make a cigarette plug attachment for my handheld radio CB?

I have a hand held radio that goes through batteries far to fast and want to make a cigarette plug attachment that will use the car's battery and saves me money on buying batteries. The radio runs on 3 AAA batteries and is in series so therefore runs on 4.5V. I have no idea what the Amps are or the resistance. How would i make this adapter? I need an experts help, I'm knowledgeable enough to put it together but am unsure of how to make it!! HELP!

Hey, i dont know personally how to make one for your specific handheld, but i do know radioshack sells DC adaptors with interchangeable ends. try visiting local shack and bring the radio, they will plug it in make sure it fits, and you can use that.

also if you want better perfomance out of that handheld, get a mag mount antenna. The rubber ducky antenna on the walkie, must be verticle to actually work.... if you got a mag moubt you could plug it in their and have MUCH better range.

Whats the difference in a Handheld CB /Handheld scanner?

Ok guys whats the difference between the 2 of these, or do they do about the same things? And also what are weather bands, and whats the difference between 3 or 10? thanks for any answer

With a CB you talk into a mike to other people with CB's on the same channel, and a scanner you just listen as it rapidly scans different channels stopping when it hears communication (police calls, fire calls, etc.). Both are on bands or frequencies.

A CB is usually not hand held. It most often is mounted into vehicle so, for example, truckers can talk to other truckers on the road.

  • Antenna for a handheld CB radio

I have an early 90’s style Radio-Shack handheld radio and an antenna mount. Is there a specific type of antenna I should buy to fit this radio?

What is the best way to buy an antenna and set it up without having to spend a heaps of money?

I have I read that you need to tune the antenna using an SWR meter, but I do not own one. Is there a way to tune the antenna without using an SWR meter?

So, what type of CB antenna should I buy for a handheld radio?

You haven’t told us the exact model of Radio Shack walkie talkie, so I can only reply generally. I cannot know what fitting or connector is used to link your old handheld CB to a replacement antenna, and you have not explained what is wrong with the original antenna and what type it was meant to be.
