Just a quick review of of the Radioshack PRO-164 radio scanner. I#39;m still learning how to use it to listen to the police but it picks up ...
I'm in England and am thinking of buying a handheld radio scanner (the Uniden 3500XLT) and am just wondering what kind of stuff you can listen to. I know there's aircraft but what about police, ambulances. taxis, trains etc? If a train/bus driver or a police officer nearby uses their radio would my scanner pick it up? I should add that it is for personal use only; I'd just like to "listen in" on all those everyday transmissions that go on around us as it would no doubt be fascinating.
Many transmissions are digitally encoded now, such as the police, but you may still pick up stuff from aircraft, buses, etc.
Also many organizations use higher frequencies than they used to - usually out of the range of many scanners.
There are a few web sites around that give precise details of frequencies for most areas.

Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner, and if so, how far will it pick up?
In a word, no.
A CB radio operates in the 27mhz band. Most police are operating in the 150 or 450mhz bands, a few in 800mhz and a few in the 30-40mhz bands.
It would be impractical to modify the CB for these frequencies, it would basically require a total redesign but I suppose you could maybe get it to go into the low 30mhz range but I doubt there would be much there.
Then there is another Huge obstacle. The CB operates using AM modulation, the police will be using FM modulation. Even if you could tune in the right frequency, you wouldnt be able to hear them.
Trade the CB for a scanner.

I would prefer to have a portable scanner but i mostly want to know which one is better. please give some kind of explanation why one is better than the other or why the equal quality. also if you perhaps have a better scanner in mind please post buying link to it thanks alot.
If portability is not a real need I would highly recommend a Base Station Scanner. I have several of both portable handhelds and base stations and I prefer the base stations.
I personally like the basestations more because the audio quality is better overall in general and they are easier to use while setting desktop.
If you truely need to be mobile with your scanner than it is also an easy choice and you would need to go with the portable.
Both scanners in the links are nice choices by the way.
