Does any one know where i can buy a handheld portable AM radio

Radio shack has some, but mostly AM/FM and sometimes short wave. Depending on where you are, short wave AM may be your choice.
CCrane has a lot of good radios. Try thm at ccrane.com

What is the best and smallest handheld two way radio with the longest range?
TELEFUNKEN Radio, Phono and Tape Recorder Folder (W-Germany 1969)_2

I'm 24 and have dealt with two-way since I was 9, but need help researching and finding what would be the best handheld radio with the most wattage output.

Commercial handheld radios are pretty much limited to 4 watts of power for UHF and 5 watts for VHF. The unlicensed radios are typically limited to 1/4 watt. You can't get any serious range going handheld to handheld. The lower power and small antenna limits the reach. Depending on terrain (buildings, trees, water, hills, etc) you might get 5 miles or so. The unlicensed radios claim 1 mile but seldom get this far. You would need to use a repeater to boost the signal strength and range. You can pay for repeater access from a 2-way radio shop. You can also become a ham and use a ham repeater. Kenwood radios are a good value. Motorola is good but tends to be pricey. Icom is also a good brand. There are many other brands available.

What type of CB antenna should I buy for a handheld radio?
VALVO Radio Rohren - Tubes Brochure (W-Germany 1939)_6

I have an early 90's style radio-shack handheld radio, and an antenna mount. Is there a specific type of antenna I should buy? Is there anyway I can buy it and set it up without spending a fortune? And I read that you need to tune it using a SWR meter, I obviously dont have one, and is there a way to tune it without using one?

Go to radio shack, they will hook you up.

If you get a full band antenna specifically for CB, you wont have to tune it.

What is the range of a typical 5 watt handheld vhf radio?
SIEMENS Radio Brochure (W-Germany 1953)_4

I'm wondering how far off shore I can go in my boat and still be able to talk to someone on land using a 5 watt handheld vhf radio. All the ones I'm looking to buy have no indication of this. Thanks for any input....

We have a vintage Sitex HH-300 handheld aboard our vessel at all times, as well as our base-mounted Uniden. The Sitex does extremely well using the "rubber-ducky" antenna to a distance of about 5 to 7 miles over open water talking to other sailboats and marinas.

If you're communicating handheld-to-handheld, about three miles is the the range you can expect.

I echo the opinions above, I wouldn't depend on a handheld as our sole means of radio communication.

Hope this helps!

How to make a cigarette plug attachment for my handheld radio CB?
SIEMENS Radio Brochure (W-Germany 1953)_1

I have a hand held radio that goes through batteries far to fast and want to make a cigarette plug attachment that will use the car's battery and saves me money on buying batteries. The radio runs on 3 AAA batteries and is in series so therefore runs on 4.5V. I have no idea what the Amps are or the resistance. How would i make this adapter? I need an experts help, I'm knowledgeable enough to put it together but am unsure of how to make it!! HELP!

Hey, i dont know personally how to make one for your specific handheld, but i do know radioshack sells DC adaptors with interchangeable ends. try visiting local shack and bring the radio, they will plug it in make sure it fits, and you can use that.

also if you want better perfomance out of that handheld, get a mag mount antenna. The rubber ducky antenna on the walkie, must be verticle to actually work.... if you got a mag moubt you could plug it in their and have MUCH better range.
