CB Radios Answers

I am hearing that alot of people are starting to use Marine band radios off roading. ?

Instead of your cb. This is what im reading but the switch comes because a cb radio has lower wattage and doesn't get the range that a marine radio would legally that is. Im hearing that marine is the next best thing to a ham radio which you need a license to operate. They also say modifying a cb for better range is illegal. So please correct if what im reading is wrong.

I've neither heard nor seen this while out off roading.

A CB's transmitting power is limited by the FCC to 4 watts total without the need for a license. FRS handheld radios are limited to 1/2 watt and also don't require a license to use.

Any radio that has a transmitting power over 5 watts or operates on any frequencies reserved for GMRS, Marine or Ham (Single Side Band) operator's use are required to have a FCC issued operator's license. (This license currently costs $85)

Failure to obtain the license prior to using your radio can lead to stiff fines if caught. (The license is required to be with the radio when it's being used and law enforcement may ask to see it)

You are correct that modifying a CB radio to a transmit level higher than 4 watts is illegal.

All of this information can be found on the FCC website.

VHF5 marine band radio..I have working one but need replacement battery & or charger?

Hi Debbe!
The Humminbird VHF5 is a discontinued model, but you might be able to get the parts you need here:

http://www.humminbird.com/support/faq.as px?ask=yes

(EDIT) Here's the owner's manual for your radio.

http://www.humminbird.com/PDF/vhf5.pdf
The batteries are AA's (eight of 'em) and you can use NiCd/NiMh rechargeables or alkalines (Although alkalines get a little spendy over time unless you go for the economy 16-pack for around 9 bucks)

I'd think a 12v 200mA wall adapter (center pin positive) that fits your socket, (might have to check for proper fit first) would charge your battery. I use the same for our Sitex HH-300 marine radio, except I had to reverse the plug connections as Sitex used a center-pin-negative configuration .

THIS might just be what you're looking for as a battery charger!

dose any one know of a radio with citizen band and marine band in one unit?

i live by the ocean and want a cb and a uhf but dont want two radios

I'm not aware of one, but I guess they may exist. I know that you used to be able to buy a car AM/FM radio with a built in CB, but that's really a different thing. My feeling would be that the marine radio is more of a professional unit and the manufacturer might not want to put a CB radio in it. The amplitude modulation of the CB may interfere with the frequency modulation of the marine radio. It would still require 2 antennas as the frequency bands are so different.

try the Marine Radio Store online at the link below. They have it marked as discontinued and apparently have some left for $87.

Where can I buy an Emerson MBR 1 shortwave radio in the Kansas City area?

It is a multi-band SW radio that allows you to listen to aircraft, police, marine, and international radio stations.

Forget listening to the police on that radio in KC (as most of those have moved to 800 mhz where that radio won't go)

Radio Shack used to sell a radio like that but apparently you are limited to online now, or places possibly like Big lots

Other than that, looks like the internet..sorry
